Questions about the Thallonians and Danteri

I like both species and was wondering if they have shown up in any non-New Frontier stories?

Are there any Thallonians or Danteri in Starfleet?

Are there any stories featuring the Thallonian Empire before its fall, not counting the first four books of PAD's series?

Double Helix's final volume features the Thallonians and as it's a SGZ-era Picard tale, it's pre-fall.

the Danteri are mentioned as selling ships to Tezwa in ATT Kill. but they don't appear.

Weren't the Danteri said to be Federation members in the early NF books? Though this seemed to change later on.

correct. they were joining the UFP in #1, hence the withdrawal from Xenex, but it seems like they've left by Being Human and ATT Kill

I don`t recall that the Danteri ever left the UFP. What I found interesting is that Xenex is now a protectorate of the Federation.

I find it hard to believe the Federation would allow Danter as a member in the first place. Unless their withdrawal from Xenex was a condition of Federation membership?

I don`t think it was mentioned how long the Danteri have already been members in early NF. I was left with the impression that they were members in spite of occupying Xenex. Strategical and political reasons were probably more important here than strictly sticking to morals. Having the Danteri as members was more beneficial to the Federation than protecting a poor planet which has nothing of value to offer. It seems that only changed after the Danteri, as members of the Federation, asked them to mediate.

The Danteri sold warp technology to the Xenexians and - if I remember correctly - they also sold ships in "A Time to...".

This is one of the few open questions left from early NF. With what did Calhoun`s brother pay the Danteri? I don`t see that he could give them any money, technology or other valuables, like minerals. That leaves favours.

Does the Federation know about this deal and after it happened twice, who knows how many other civilizations they sold warp technology or other sensitive technology to in spite of being a member of the Federation?

I wonder if PAD will ever explore these questions.

From NF 1:

"the fact is. the Danteri have asked us to aid them in this. difficult situation."

"Aid how?" D'ndai asked.

"To be perfectly candid," the man identified as Crusher said, "the Danteri empire represents a rather strategically situated group of worlds. The Federation has been in discussion with the Danteri about their possibly joining us."

I struggle with that, everything we've seen in canon material suggests that running a repressive regime is a no-no for Federation membership. A strategic alliance, I can buy. Membership of the Federation, no I just cannot see it. They were executing children in the town square!

Just to clarify, it has never been said that the Danteri we ever members of the Federation, correct?

I could have sworn, but I'll freely admit that it's been almost a decade since I last read early NF, and my copies are all boxed up...

Interesting, I could have sworn that the Danteri were members of the Federation! But it seems I was wrong. Hm, I think I will also start some digging...

I was concentrating on the part titled NOW and on page 122 there is confirmation that the Danteri are indeed members of the Federation or at the very least were shortly before the Excalibur started its mission:

"And you will let a member of the Federation - namely ourselves - deal alone with the security threat that the fallen Thallonian Empire represents?" (Ryjaan, who is a Danteri)

It's odd because a couple of pages previously:

Riker was not surprised by the presence of a representative from Danter. The Danteri were the Thallonians' "neighbors" over in Sector 221-H. a nearby, rival empire who were as ironfisted in their way as the Thallonians had been in theirs.
and then

Spock was unperturbed by the vehemence of Ryjaan's reaction. "The Danteri share borders with the Thallonian Empire. or, to be more precise, the former Thallonian Empire. The Danterian desire for." He briefly considered the word "conquest" and discarded it as too inflammatory. ". acquisitiveness. is well known.

further edit: it's actually more confusing than I first thought

"Ryjaan. since the Danteri are members of the UFP, I am informing you that the Federation would consider it contrary to its best interests to have Danterian ships entering Thallonian space in any great numbers, inflaming an already inflammatory situation and stirring up hostilities. I am telling you this informally. If you desire, a formal resolution can be delivered by the Council

This is where it gets really confusing, Ryjaan's response is:

"I see," said Ryjaan dryly. "And you anticipate that the Danteri will simply sit back and take no action, allowing the Federation to enter Thallonian space in force and shift the balance of power in a direction they find more appealing. Is that it?"
I'm totally confused now...

Huh, I never really noticed all of this before. I was under the impression that the Federation didn't really get along with the Danteri, but it has been ages since I read the books. I guess I must have been thinking of Mac's issues with them, and then adding in the whole Federation to that.
