Question for Old Trekkies

Yes, I'm older than dirt. Yes, I saw the first episode of TOS the night it aired. And I know that there are others like me out there. So I'd like to know if you old Trekies got the same impression I did.

Loved the ship. The casting was excellent. Script was good, but not great. Quinto nailed Spock. (Loved the "F-- You, Vulcan Science Academy" scene). Pine is a better actor than Shatner.

But the film as a whole lacked - elegance (for lack of a better word). It seemed "heavy handed" in some way. The pace was like a video game.

I find more and more films that are using this video game pace. All violence and excitement. The last Bond film is a perfect example.

One more thing - as a classically trained musician I was disappointed in the music. Good for a video game - but the end title was a painfully "bumpy" mix of old and new music. The visual was also choppy. I know they were trying to imitate the original, but it was plain awful. (Jerry Goldsmith - we miss you!)

But I'd like to see another movie with these actors, and I'd love to see a series with them and this timeline. How 'bout you?

Old timer here too and I agree with the above. It didn't *feel right* to me. No amount of eye popping CGI will replace a well told story imo. While the movie was OK, I'm hoping for the next to be better.

Yet another oldie. I saw TOS first runs in the UK. Was completely addicted, and frankly might not have made it through puberty without Trek to escape to.

I loved the film for what it was. I was happy with the 'time-technobabble' treating time travel differently from every other time episode we've seen: it means 'my' Trek remains somewhere intact in its own timeline, while the new folk can play with the characters to their hearts content. A bit like writing fanfic. ;) I thought they were extremely respectful of the traditions - somene had spent a hell of a lot of time creating recogniseable versions of uniforms, technology and even sounds.

Was is overpaced? yes - but IMHO so are almost all modern sci-fi films. Too much whizz-bang, not enough story-telling. But that's what modern film-goers expect, so who am I to object?

This was a modern film but it was also clearly trek.

I'd be very happy to see this lot back again in more stories in whatever medium is appropriate.

Im an OG fan. Saw TOS from the first episode through the last one with the benefit of having the actual 1960's as a back drop. This made the experience just that much more powerful and unique as opposed to seeing the original in the 70s, 80s or 90s.

That being said, I was so pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed the movie. That had to do with the characters whose personalities the new actors were able to approximate without dipping into parody, while giving them a personal spin. No small feat.

The new movie cannot provide the beautiful naivette TOS gave us, that would be unrealistic and stupid in these times, but successfully bringing the old characters into the 2000's will trump all.

A word about the pacing; like someone else in this thread who is older just mentioned, I also have played video games and I had zero problems keeping up. If I may be honest, those who do, you're going to probably continue to have problems because gaming is completely ingrained in our culture.

It's no longer, 'video game style' pacing, it's simply "action movie pacing".

I am 41 and grew up on TOS reruns in the late 70s. Have watched pretty much every episode of every series. Gotta say, I enjoyed it. There were some things I have issue with in this new rebooted version, but overall, I liked it and want to see more.

yes but also they could do anything now, main cast members can die (even mainstay planets ;)), new ones introduced.

Yes, they could. I actually wouldn't bet against them killing off of the main characters in the next film. In fact, I'll be surprised if they don't.

I'll be with them likely whatever they do now because they have the courage to go with the flow and see what happens (like true explorers in the star trek sense!). Lets see what's out there! :techman:

I'm slightly younger than dirt. Caught Trek when it was running in the UK in the early 70s. I frakkin' loved it!

Pine was great as Kirk, but I'm not going to call him a better actor (in the role) than Shatner (yet).

Until there's a scene where Pine goes shirtless, we are in no position to compare.

LOL, he went shirtless.....when he was about to bang the Orion chick...
but no torn tunics...that'll be the barometer we need to use!

He did fine as Kirk...was he outstanding..no...did he suck...no. I would appreciate it if he did pick up a few more mannerisms, which he can do since he's playing young kirk...yet to evolve into the man he'll become.

So not necessarily imitate him...but a few more mannerisms would make me happy or rather happier...

I too agree that the pace was fast...why can't they be a little more deliberate and methodical?? Why do these action scenes have to occur at lightning fast speed??? Can't we let the tension build a little...nope it's just shoot em and bang em up!!

But I do want to see more of this crew...I left the theater saying I wish I could see their next adventure next week! However, they are never ever going to replace the originals...NO WAY...I mean Kirk for me (etc..) is always going to be Shatner first and then et al....and I don't give a fuck what timeline we're talking about...but Kirk is Shatner first...period.

I am sad about Vulcan...but then I remember that Vulcan doesn't exist anyway and that I really do have a lot of other ...real things to be sad about...so let's all try to keep this in perspective...even though it can be hard because this crap is close to our heart.

When I studied Communications back in the Day for new reporting and photography we were taught that a camera that is constantly moving tells you nothing, it only tries to portray false action, someone should tell JJ This. It worked for Cloverfield, it does no work for Trek. But unfortunately too many critics and fans think that just because you film something at a breakneck pace that it's modern and not Stalwart like old Trek. Slowing the camera and scene down can also give some weight and emotion to a scene. Tell me one scene in the new movie that matches the emotion abd power and majesty found in the last 10 minutes of First Contact.
