Question about Wolverine in the comics.

I haven't read any comics in about 15 years and I don't think this was ever explored back then. In the comics, Wolverine's healing ability has been so powerful at some points that he has regenerated back from pretty near nothing. Have they ever done a story line where parts of his body separated from him basically grow back as a complete clone? Say, he loses his hand, has that hand ever grown back an entire copy of him?

Has there ever been an explanation as to why something like this hasn't happened?

In Wolverine vol. 3, #57 it is revealed that, when Wolverine is injured so seriously that his body actually dies before his healing factor can repair the damage, he returns to life by fighting with Azrael, the Angel of Death, while trapped in Purgatory, due to Wolverine defeating Azrael in combat in the real world during the First World War.[89] However, after Wolverine's soul was damaged following his resurrection and brainwashing by the Hand, he made a new deal with Azrael to repair the damage that had been done to his soul that negated their previous arrangement, with the result that, the next time Wolverine sustains death-inducing injuries, he will remain dead, and his healing factor has apparently been slightly weakened in the process.[90]

A study by the University of British Columbia states that Wolverine's healing factor resembles the axolotl's ability to regenerate lost limbs. It suggests that a novel protein—which the study's authors dubbed Howlett—found in tissue samples taken from him, and which resembles the Amblox protein found in axolotl but is much more efficient, is responsible for Wolverine's rapid regeneration.

Most likely, the body parts still have to be connected to Logan's brain to regenerate otherwise it's just flesh and if it regenerate it would just be some blob monster.

Logan did regenerate from a drop of blood once, but that was due to magic and not his powers.

I would so enjoy the real Wolverine returning and the current one turning out to be something that regenerated from leftover parts some time in the past. Way in the past.
