Question about Garak?

Garak007

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I wondered about this for sometime I thought I must find a forum of sorts and ask this question.

At what point did the crew of DS9 enlist (not officially of course) Garak in the war effort? I know in the last series he turned into a freedom fighter but at what point did he realise he had to join the Fed against the Dominion?

One episode he is at his shop and the next he is warring a Federation Com badge when they all crashed landed in that Gem'adar ship. At what ponit did they accept him into their group? I.E the DS9 crew.

It was right after Cardassia joined the Dominion and a price was put on Garak's head by Gul Dukat ( I know it was never actually said but it was implied when all of Garak's sources died)

He was never enlisted persay. They let Garak aboard when they evacuated for the incoming Dominion station occupation, because Garak requested they do so so he wouldn't be executed by Dukat while Dukat was occupying the station.

Other than that, they just used his expertise/connections from time to time, when applicable.

I'm a bad Niner because I can't recite chaper and verse for the episode, but there was a scene in which the DS9 crew sat around chatting ostentatiously about something they wanted Garak to communicate to his contacts on Cardassia - I think Garak was there to measure Sisko for a suit or some such - basically Sisko decided to use Garak as a conduit for the info and Garak tacitly agreed without anyone saying a word officially. It might have been around the time of the episode "Defiant" - maybe that episode? That seemed to be when Garak "came on board."

That was from "Way of the Warrior". It wasn't about enlisting Garak. It was about leaking the news of the imminent Klingon invasion to the Cardassians without the Klingons knowing that they had done so. In fact, he relayed the news directly to Dukat.

Garak basically threw his lot in with the Federation when the Dominion took over the Cardassia. I don't really think we saw him actively working for them though until "Call to Arms" or "A Time to Stand".

For some reason I can't quote on this forum but what Navaros says make sense. For that point he was enlisted and trust from his fellow station friends was a all time high from that point

To my memory, Temis is correct. He would never be enlisted officially because he was Cardassian, but his expertise and contacts were enlisted from time to time, starting with notifying the Cardies that the Klingons were invading. He was also helpful in unraveling the mystery of the young Cardassian orphaned on Bajor at the close of the occupation for a start, being allowed to question Dukat directly on the matter.

By early S7 though, they were coming to rely on him (even if still not in a formal role) - Starfleet Command were sending intercepted communications to DS9 specifically for Garak to decode on a regular basis (to the point where Garak closed his shop and worked full-time on the intelligence), and thus when Garak's claustrophobic attacks in Afterimage forced him to stop, it was a major blow.

Also during the break between seasons 5 and 6 Garek was "debriefed" by Starfleet Intelligence.
