Question About Future Shatnerverse Novels?

I just wish they could have gotten rid of the hardbacks after they'd reprinted the Crucible trilogy.... :(

As far as I know, the Crucible hardcover wasn't cancelled because of some decision to stop publishing hardbacks (and really I don't recall hearing anything about Pocket making any such decision). My understanding is that it was cancelled because Marco's layoff required delaying various projects, and since the Crucible omnibus was meant as a movie tie-in, there wasn't much point to doing it if it got delayed.

Oh, okay, good to know. Still, as a longtime fan of the hardback format, I'm saddened not to have what I consider some of the best original-series-Trek fiction ever written as a nice, lovely hardback book. Ah well...maybe some day...

When I was reading "Captain's Glory" there was a point where Picard thinks he is about to die and he thinks of Beverly in his last moments. I thought it was a bit of a WTF moment that didn't make sense until I found out they have a relationship in other books.

Having not read Captain's Glory (or any Shatnerverse books past Spectre which is where they, for me, took a turn towards unreadable) I cannot comment on the specific scene. However, there's certainly a precedent and history to their relationship that implies untapped romantic feelings from Next Generation.

Any chance the Shatnerverse could ever be brought into continuity with the main book line?

I would actually like a Next Gen novel with Kirk, as a example, but I'm never sure if Kirk's resurrection is canon outside Shatner's books.

As far as canon (i.e., filmed Star Trek) is concerned, Kirk died in Generations. I'm fine with the books leaving him that way.

I prefer the alternative fate for Kirk offered in Crucible. Won't say what it is, but it fits the character far better than "The Exploits of SuperKirk" found in the Shatner books.

No more hardbacks? Even for Shatner's Trek?

It's never been confirmed about "no more hardcovers ever", but Peter David's next "New Frontier" will be a trade rather than a hardcover. The new movie novelization has just been announced as a trade, whereas the last four movies were hardcovers.

That's gonna look out of place next to my other Shatner Trek Novels.
I shelve "The Lives of Dax" trade and "New Frontier: No Limits" collection beside associated hardcovers and they look fine. Since no one else ever really enters my ST shrine/room, I'm the only one who notices anyway. ;)

If you already have ten Shatner ST hardcovers next to each other, the changes in spine design and fonts already makes them look pretty eclectic.

I hope they go for a second Academy Book. I don't think they need to wait for the dust to settle because there is no way to tie it into the next Movie.
I actually liked that Shatner & the Reeves-Stevenses attempted to incorporate references to Remans and "the Shinzon" to the "Totality" storyline midstream. It took me by surprise but it worked to make the books seem more current. Mind you, the stronger parts of that trilogy were the ones set in the 5YM, proving (to me) that Shatner might have done better writing 5YM hardcovers instead of "Kirk's buddy, Picard" stories.

There will be lots of references to the new movie that can be peppered throughout a second Shatner "Academy" novel, even if the story remains incompatible with the main movie arc. I think Margaret was wise to delay it.

Is it confirmed that there still is going to be another Kirk Academy novel? I was under the impression that Shatner had put the kibosh on that.

Shatner is in a snit that there wasn't an audio novel for the first one, and that Pocket didn't promote his new novel as thoroughly as his previous nine, and that he didn't have an automatic contract for Book 2.

If the concept of a second novel had been totally quashed, I'd have expected the mention of "Academy: Trial Run" to have been dropped from the last page of the MMPB reprint of "Academy: Collision Course". But it was there.

ClayInCA: Care to PM me or put it in a "Spoiler" warning? I'd like to have that Crucible information for my own fan fic's "Author's Notes" for my "Star Trek: Exeter" project.

In case anyone who's intersted, here's a list of the books that have been categorized as hardcovers on Memory Beta. I'm sure there are more, but this was the only list they have on there. http://http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Hardcovers

Yea...that list is not complete because I count 60 Pocket Book hardcovers in my collection.

Kevin

I have 79 hardcovers in mine but a lot of them are book club editions. Maybe we hardback lovers can still get a few through book clubs. :techman:

Okay, I tried to update the page at
http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Hardcovers

but it comes up blank in Edit Mode, in both Firefox and Safari. Is it a protected page or something?

The list is a bit of a mess, isn't it. Several titles are filed under the word "The", while others are not.

The missing original hardcovers are: "Vulcan's Forge", "The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 1", "Dark Mirror", "Triangle: Imzadi II", "I, Q", "Genesis Force", "Mosaic", "Pathways" and "Stone and Anvil" and the novelizations of "Generations", "First Contact" (movie, not TNG episode), "Insurrection", "Nemesis" (movie, not VOY episode), "Broken Bow" and "Shockwave".

You can't add things to a category from the category page itself. Those changes have to be effected on the novels' individual pages. Categories in wiki terms are automatically generated lists, sorted by adding code like the following at the bottom of a page:

[[Category:Hardcovers|Return, The]]

If you just put [[Category:Hardcovers]] it will sort by the page title as is, which would be why certain titles are sorted by "The," instead of as they should be.
