Quake Live Is Coming

I guess this is going to be a browser version of Quake III developed by Id. Goes live later today. Excited to try it out!

I got a kick out of this comment on RPS regarding the Q3 vs. UT debates that inevitably seem to accompany any discussion of Quake Live:

Call me stupid, but what's the point of a browser version of an FPS? I mean, the original game has online multiplayer, right?

It's free, has a bunch of matchmaking and persistent stats-tracking tools, and can be run in a convenient browser window by almost any PC on the market today. Those qualities, in addition to the fact that it's a mechanically simple game, make it perfect for those times when you've got ten minutes to kill and feel like some old-school FPS action from the days before "cinematic realism" took over the genre.

Exactly. That's why I am looking forward to it: I can kill 10 minutes easily without having to worry about installs or anything else.

Alright. I came, I saw, I pwned some fools.

Haven't played Quake III pretty much since it came out and this seems way more fun than I remember. The new game types and the stats/ranking system should add a lot to the mix.

Thumbs up. I'm sure this is going to chew up some time.

Anyway, I'm waiting for Battlefield Heroes... freaking beta needs to end already.

It says I need Windows. Which doesn't make a ton of sense to me since both OSes now use the same intel based chipsets.

That doesn't matter, they still can't run the same code.

Anyway, they've said that both linux and OSX support are on their list.
