Problem with Kirk's immediate promotion to Captain

Pine's performance is very good. His self-belief is not mere arrogance and he has an underlying vulnerability that is very endearing. Shatner's performance eventually descended into self-caricature. Thankfully Pine managed to avoid that by a mile.

and while we dont get to see that much of kirk new movie education we do know that pike says he has genius level intelligence.
Pike says that, yeah. I wish we'd actually seen some evidence of it at some point in the story.

I have nothing against Chris Pine. I think he's a decent young actor (e.g., I enjoyed his performance in Bottle Shock). I do think he was somewhat miscast as Kirk, though (at least compared to Urban and Quinto, who captured their characters more easily), and moreover that he was very badly served by the way the writing (mis)characterized Kirk.

Well, he's got five more movies to get it down. He could easily gain 100 pounds and descend into self-caricature by then.
