pretty girls of Star Trek, TOS

ChuppieCheebo

Cadet
Newbie
Hello! I'm new here! I'm also a relatively new fan of TOS, although I grew up with TNG. I drew some of the lovely and inspiring girls from TOS and thought I'd share some here.

Wow!

I gotta say, I'm loving your work. Actually, in spite of the highly stylized approach your drawings take, I can recognize all but, like, two of these characters. Your versions of Rayna Kopec and Mara the Klingon are spot on perfect. And I love the rest as well. It's as much as testament to your skill as a nod to the skill of the production crew of TOS to come up with such iconic costumes, hair styles, and make-ups.

Your style really seems to lend itself to the 60's. It reminds me a lot of cartoons from the Rocky and Bullwinkle school of character design. Which is cool.

May I ask, what turned you on the original series?

I hope you become a regular here. I'd like to see more.

I have to agree with Albertese. I love the 60's art homage in your work. These illustrations could have come right out of a 1968 issue of Life magazine. Great job.

Impressive.

I have to give it a shot ...

1. I have no idea.
2. Rayna Kaypec
3. Mara
4. Vina ... as the green Orion woman
5. Doctor Elizabeth Dehner
6. Marla McGivers
7. One of Vaal's villagers, Sayana
8. Mudd's women, Ruth and Magda

Okay, I have to say... you have some real talent there, Katie.

Lots of people can draw faces which look "sorta-kinda" like the character. Lots can replicate a face from a photo to look like the photo.

It's a rarer skill to be able to capture the ... "spirit?"... of a person's face to the extent that the casual glancer can pick up who it is, even from a caricature.

You really need to think about pursuing this as a paying gig... assuming you're not doing so already, of course. Make it all up into a portfolio and send it off to some magazines. Obviously you enjoy it... and when you find something you enjoy, are good at, and can get paid for, you'd be foolish not to pursue it. :)

Great caricature art......! Couldn't remember all the names, but very recognizable and expressive.

Wow! Personally, I can do technical stuff, but I'm lousy with characters. As some of the others said, even though it's very stylized, you can still recognize most or all of the faces. Is this marker on paper?

Also, what kind of markers are you using? The only ones I've used a lot are Copic, which this looks alot like. But I've never used Prismacolor's stuff or anything else. So what are you using?

ChuppieCheebo, you do outstanding work. Don't let these other folks damn you with faint praise! :rommie:

Let me know when you get to Joanne Linville as the Romulan Commander in "The Enterprise Incident", or Andrea Domm as Yeoman Smith in "Where No Man..." or if you progress into the movies and TNG, if you ever do Saavik, Ilia or Troi.

These are awesome! They really capture the 60s vibe--they remind me of a caricature of Twiggy I seem to remember. And as someone said up-thread, you nail the spirit of the actresses--you really capture Sally Kellerman and Yvonne Craig.

Wow, thanks everyone for the kind comments! I really like a lot of art from the 60's, so I'm really flattered by those who said my drawings remind me of them! Albertese, to answer your question, I suppose I'd always been aware of TOS, and knew it was something I'd probably really like, but it just took me a long time to sit down and watch the episodes. It's a wonderful series- I wish there were more episodes. Oh! And about the markers, mostly these are colored with Chartpaks, although I like copics as well, especially for doing more detailed stuff. Chartpaks are my favorite markers, although they bleed like crazy and stink to high heaven! :)

Psion, wow! I'm surpised you can name them! Some of the drawings are pretty stylized, so I'm happy they are somewhat recognizable regardless.

Cary, that's a wonderful thing to say, about capturing the "spirit." Thank you very much! I am very very lucky that I make my living drawing, although not as an illustrator. I tried to get into that line of work, but it's pretty difficult! Maybe someday!

B.J., Yes! These are colored with markers on post-its. I know it sounds weird, but it's less intimidating to draw on a tiny yellow scrap of paper than on a huge white canvas. :)

Wingsley- Ha ha! I'll be sure to post any new girls I draw here! There are so many more that look as though they'd be fun to put on paper! Girls from that decade were sure amazing.

Again, thanks everyone! After reading this I feel like drawing some more. :D

Love the work. Reminds me of the work I have seen done by a cartoonist that I can't bring to mind right now. Grr... Great job through.
