President Lincoln meets new Uhura

Well, When Lincoln said that line in The Savage Curtain, Uhura's reply was something like: "in our century we've learned not to fear words"...
I never really thought that was a believable comeback; it seems to me that people will continue to be offended by words -- at least a little -- even in the 23rd century.

However, I see the point the writer of that episode was trying to make -- and the writer did chose that phrase deliberately because it was offensive. I would think that if The Savage Curtain were made today, and Lincoln said that same line to Uhura, Uhura might say something similar about how people have evolved past being terribly offended by words, but I think she would be a little more offended and maybe say someting to "correct" Lincoln's phrasing.

I know that when I hear it now as an adult, and can understand it better, it just sounds so.....condescending. :(

Lincolns comment about "apologizing when no offense was given" sounds so much like today though. No one can say anything to anyone about anything without offense being taken. Hopefully we'll reach the point Uhura references.

If you look closely when he said it a short look of fury passed over Nichelles(sp) face then she delivered her line. Zoe probbaly wwould have protested the line in the script phase and the line would not have been used. I will take you at your word about the offense thing.

I consider this one of TOS better written passages. In the era for which it was written, this was a strong message against prejudice in all forms.
Mr. Lincoln says something, suddenly realizes it may have offended a charming lady, apologizes... only to be told by Uhura that we, as a society, have grown beyond being offended by mere words.
1) Mr. Lincoln was conscious of a possible offense, showing he is an enlightened gentleman
2) Uhura is enlightened enough to recognize his innocent turn of phrase
Upon reading the posts, even today, this is a necessary message. Just food for thought.:vulcan:
