Predict Your Trek XI Continuity Errors Right Here!

Okay, after all the fun we had with how badly "Enterprise" messed with the Trek timeline, I thought we'd start a thread to predict all the wonderful continuity errors that will appear in the next film. What will we see that we shouldn't see?

Right off the bat, I'm going to say we'll see a Mindmeld, even though we all know Spock did not perform one until Dagger of the Mind?

Also, how will McCoy's presence be reconciled if he didn't come on board the Enterprise until after the original pilot?

I'm sure people are going to argue that this is a reboot of the Trek universe or something, but has that ever been officially stated?

Kirk will be shown eating hotdogs. In TOS episode 15, Act 2, Scene 2, Kirk said he hated hotdogs since he was 12. His brother George told him it was snake, and put it down his shirt. This film will suck more than DS9!

I think there will be a bigger issue with WNMHGB than the actual series itself.

Since it's all science-fiction anyway, from each instant in time a different set of actions can occur, creating different realities, causing realties to branch out. The result is that you have realities, or continuities, that are similar but not exactly the same.

Somehow I doubt you think this.

Do I really have to put a sarcasm tag?

Anywhoo, I think they will use CGI not 1960's SFX tech, won't use physical models, Starfleet women will wear pants, and Kirk won't sleep with every alien babe.

Thank goodness.

Kirk will part his hair on the wrong side prompting calls from crazed fans that Abrams shit all over Trek.

Kirks pants will be the wrong length. I dont think his sideburns will be pointy enough either.

They're going to have a lot of the regular characters meeting before they served on the Enterprise, particularly Kirk and Spock when it's bloody apparent onscreen that they didn't meet until Kirk took command of the E.

None of the uniforms will reconciled with WNMHGB, The entire Engineering dept. will be seen in Red. When actually they should wear Khaki-beige. Spock wearing Command Gold in the first TOS episode will also be conveniantly ignored from the looks of the teaser poster.

As for the rest: all the usual things... denim uniforms, chunky phasers, communicators the size of a walnut, transporter effects that look like a cloud burst, sharp-ridged Klingons with ginger beards, a TNG style warp core laid on its side, Kirk putting his boots back on in McCoy's cabin, some Admiral named Berman, Spock eating a Big Mac, some really arrogant Vulcans heard to remark "Oy Vey!" and a Xindi-Reptilian wearing a "Go climb a rock" T-shirt.

Any of these will result in fans being dragged from the cinema, foaming at the mouth! :p

Spock's physiognomy will be noticeably different, as he is being played by Zachary Quinto, not Leonard Nimoy, and thus does not have the same facial structure. This will outrage Trekkies and physiognomists alike, the latter of which will write satirical books about science fiction playing fast and loose with the laws of physiognomy.

I think it's apparent that they were not friends prior to Kirk taking command of the Enterprise, but I don't think it is bloody apparent that they never met before that. Nothing that was ever said leads me to believe that they never were on a pre-Enterprise mission together.

My "continuity error" is not an error in my opinion, but will be perceived as such. I think this will be a Pre-WNMHGB TOS timeframe, and McCoy will be on the ship.

I know that in 'ST-V:TFF' McCoy said "For 27 years I have been Ships Surgeon and later Chief Medical Officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise" -- which would have put him joining the crew in 2266 -- but I think Abrams can cheat by a few months and get him on the Enterprise in 2265, since many if the years are just guess's anyway. Then there's the whole Dr. Piper thing, but that can easily be explained.

i predict that 99% of the perceived 'canon' errors will actually be conflicts with 'fanon' and easily explained (such as Chekov meeting Khan)

I think we should give the writers a chance, there's too many weirdo's out there looking too much into this and picking it every last piece of it. Let the producers do their job even if a little bit of continuity is changed then so be it, im willing to make that sacrafice if it means we're gonna get a better movie.

Has it seriously not been stated that this is a reboot? They're once again trying to do an in-continuity prequel?

They won't get the nacelles on Enterprise right (wait, that's the remastered TOS).

TOS was largely episodic TV. I think continuity is less of an issue than we fear. Some of us who have seen a little too much TOS over the years and spent too much time connecting dots may be overly afraid of continuity errors. We may even ultimately notice a few in the movie. But, Abrams and his group have apparently seen their share of TOS, too. They claim they will respect what's gone before, and why not believe them?

Hell, XI could actually add to continuity by explaining the nagging mystery of how Khan knew Chekov. That alone would be worth making the movie for. ;)

I agree. There was discontinuity all over the place in TOS. The problem is we've had 40 plus years of fanon to explain those away, and this film will likely chip away at that latticework of explanation.

And. That's. O. K.

Certainly enough things will be different that a lot of hard core fans will be unhappy. Visually, the movie will contain reminders of the original designs but nothing will be identical and most of it won't be close enough to satisfy the really nitpicky.

Kirk knowing Spock before serving on Enterprise is not a problem - it's not stated or implied anywhere in TOS that this is a fact. It's just one of those "fanon" bits of nonsense.

I think the most distracting aspect of the new movie is Kirk being a female: Jessica T. Kirk just doesn't sit well with me. Even though they have signed Angelina Jolie to play the part, I still have reservations about this.

Will she have pointy sideburns?
