'Predator'y lust.

First of all the spoiler warning, even though I find the very concept ridiculous nevertheless it's a rule and, according to the new guidelines as I just read them, that doesn't apply here for movies that are several decades old, but it might apply for the upcoming film, so, let's be clear: this thread will contain information about the Predator film franchise, so, if you do not want to be exposed to such information, leave now.

So glad that's clear.
So, I wanted to open this thread up as I understand there's a new Predator film scheduled for release in February. Who's in it, when or where it will be set, who's the director or where they're going to go with it story wise, I have no earthly idea, but I've noticed that they are absolutely dead-set on never saying Predator 3. Yeah. First Predators, now the brilliantly titled The Predator. It's like they all just want to pretend that Predator 2 never happened, which I think is absolutely ridiculous, as I actually liked the second one a tiny bit better than the original. Yes, I know, I just made a lot of enemies, a lot of you are about to start with the "How in the hell can you say that...?!?!" Well, you know what, while the first is definitely a classic and one of the most iconic ultra-macho in a way only the 80s could be, high octane films ever, by the same token, now, in retrospect, it has a bit too much of a "Hey, let's hurry up and kill everyone else off so that Arnold can take his shirt off!" kind of feel to it.
Nevertheless, I always have been and always will be a huge fan of the first two. Predators I could have done just fine without, and as for the next one, I have no idea what to expect...

The Predator is being co-written and directed by Shane Black, who starred as Rick Hawkins in the original Predator movie, and then went on to write movies like Lethal Weapon 1 & 2, Monster Squad, and The Last Action Hero, and wrote and directed Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and The Nice Guys.
Here's the cast list from Wikipedia:
  • Boyd Holbrook as Quinn McKenna, a former Marine and Special Forces commando who discovers the existence of the fierce Predators but finds that no one believes they exist. James Franco was originally offered the role but passed on it before Benicio del Toro was cast, but Del Toro later had to back out due to scheduling conflicts.
  • Olivia Munn as Casey Bracket, a scientist opposite Quinn.
  • Trevante Rhodes as Nebraska Williams,[1] a former Marine who enlists in a special Predator-hunting operation headed up by Quinn, his best friend.[2] 50 Cent was originally in talks to play the role before Rhodes was cast.
  • Keegan-Michael Key as a man who teams up with Quinn and Williams to fight the Predators.[3]
  • Sterling K. Brown as a government agent who jails Quinn but later needs his help with fighting the Predators.[4]
  • Jacob Tremblay as Quinn's troubled son, who has a form of autism and is bullied in school but becomes a key player in the fight against the Predators due to his preternatural ability to learn languages.
  • Yvonne Strahovski as Quinn's ex-wife and the mother to Tremblay's character.
  • Alfie Allen as a former Marine who teams with several other outsiders, including Quinn, to stop the human-hunting Predators in suburbia.[5]
  • Thomas Jane
  • Augusto Aguilera[6]
  • Jake Busey[7] as the son of Peter Keyes.
  • Edward James Olmos as a military figure.[8]
  • Niall Matter[9]
Like it says in the decription for Alfie Allen's character, this time they're in a suburban setting.

It's interesting to see Key and Peele's career's branching out between this and Get Out. I'm curious what will be in the future for them.

I've been keeping my eye on this for a while. And this one hasn't been easy. Production was delayed several times. And the leaks sofar have not been that promising. Talks of the US military creating geneticly engineered Super Predators. And that at some point Predators would be working along side humans. This was though of as bullshit, untill a set picture found its way online, of a soldiers on a tank, together with two of the Yautja (Predators). One of the Yautja was clearly wearing US army camo pants.

I still trust Shane Black. As a writer he's been responsible for some awesome action movies, and his directing of Iron Man Three was awesome, I felt. I haven't seen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, but I heard it was recieved very well. But, with the plot details we've heard of sofar, I'm just not to sure on this one.

Both Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys are great...but I'm not encouraged by the leaked ideas from his Predator. Fingers crossed, but I guess after the last three movies featuring Predators, the only way is up. (Not really, but let me hope.)

I really am looking forward for this movie, and also like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys.
Iron man 3 not so much.
A little offtopic but are there any good Predator books?

I've heard a lot of good things about South China Sea, but that's nearly impossible to find, and usually very expensive. Predator Turnabout also gets good reviews I heard. The only personal experience I have is Tim Lebbon's Rage War trilogy, which is a Alien-Predator crossover, set in the 27th century. I liked it. Not amazing or anything, but pretty entertaining.

Sounds like that rejected idea for Jurassic Park 4.

Weren't we supposed to get sequels about the hunting preserve planet with actor Brody?

From memory, that's the only Predator novel I have really enjoyed. (Not counting novelizations.) Steve Perry ain't bad. (Same goes for his daughter S.D. Perry.)

Looks like they both feature in a brand new anthology Predator novel coming this year...

I may have to check it out. I didn't know about it until just now, so thanks to this thread for that info! :)

Sonny Landham died on Thursday.
''BILL-EEEEEEE!!!!!!!''
I hope his real death was more dignified than his movie one. Hmmmmmm.... think I'll just stand here, throw my weapons away and cut myself open. Yeah! Why not? Got nothing else to do... :wtf:

Sounds better than congestive heart failure.
Yeah, you know, for me there's a bit of a paradox about the Predator movies, especially the original. On the one hand, I love it, I've seen it more times than I could begin to count and it is one of my all-time favorite movies but, on the other, I don't mind making fun of it. Mind, hell. I enjoy it, as there are certain flaws that absolutely glare at me now, things I would not have seen when I was 14 but now they're so obvious. First he (the Predator) shoots Jesse Ventura, blows a hole in his chest big enough to walk through, then he shoots Bill Duke and blows his head into a thousand pieces; then he shoots Arnold and scratches his arm... my but that cannon suddenly lost a lot of power!

It's just a marketing thing to not number these type of films anymore. If Predators have come out in 2010 and they'd just called it Predator 3, a lot of people would be like "oh I haven't seen both 1 & 2 so I won't know what's going on, I'll give it a miss." When actually you don't need to have seen them at all. Same for say Rambo 4 which they just called "Rambo", again so as not to put people off, especially when there was a 20 year gap between 3 & 4, but you could easily follow without seeing the older ones.

The cannon didn't lose power, 80s Arnold could only be substantially injured in the shoulder/arm.

The blast actually hits Dutch's gun. His injuries are mostly from the shrapnel of the gun exploding. If you wanna joke about that scene though, that bent rubber machine gun that Anna picks up is a doozy. :D

What did any of you who have seen Predators think of it? I like Robert Rodriguez, the trailers looked good, and it had an awesome cast, so I wanted to see it when it first came out, but after seeing the reviews from critics I decided to wait and get it on Blu-Ray from Netflix and I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
