Power Rangers

Their version of Zordon was not at all what I expected, I was expecting more of a freefloating hologram, but it's actually not bad.

I'm wondering what it's supposed to represent. The original (nebulous) idea of Zordon is that Rita had banished him to a "time warp" from which he could only communicate with the normal universe via his "plasma tube." So presumably the reason his image was so blurry and wobbly was because of the distortion caused by the time warp, but in some sense he was physically there within the tube, not just a transmitted image, because in Power Rangers in Space, Dark Specter imprisoned him in an equivalent tube. This moving-mosaic Zordon is an interesting effect (although we've seen similar things in other movies, like the first couple of X-Men films), but it can only be interpreted as a representation of Zordon transmitted from somewhere else. Unless this version of Zordon is an AI within the Command Center.

I was wondering if it was something along the lines of your second idea, but I was thinking it was actually the mind of a real person who Rita trapped there.

So it's a rip-off of Chronicle, topped off with a low-budget ripoff of The Avengers' Battle of New York, filmed in the suburbs outside Star/Central/2.0 National City.

Looks terrible, folks.

Actually it looks more fun than Chronicle. That was a movie that did not hold up well on a second viewing.

And what's wrong with being filmed in Vancouver? A lot of good shows have been made there. Heck, Power Rangers has spent the past 14 years passing New Zealand off as various fictional American cities. At least the supporting actors in this movie will have approximately the right accent.

From that trailer, the film looks like a pile of shite, of course the film isn't aimed at my demographic so I'm not surprised by that at all.

Not a bad start for Ninja Steel. The three Rangers they've introduced so far are pretty likeable. I like it how they started out as strangers and reached out to help each other, bonding out of altruism. That's a good way to establish a team of heroes, because it's not just about the powers. I particularly like Sarah -- she's smart, fearless, generous, and extremely sexy.

A nice surprise to see Kelson Henderson back again, in his first series-regular role in PR since 2008, and his fifth overall. And it's reversing a trend -- he went from a human character in S.P.D. to a prosthetic-makeup role in Mystic Force to a full-suit role in Operation Overdrive to a pure voiceover role in Jungle Fury, plus occasional guest voice roles since, and now he's back to playing a human-looking character (albeit one who's actually an alien shapeshifter).

I wasn't so fond of the new theme song. I really liked the Dino Charge theme, but this one is mediocre. I'm also not impressed by the badly-acted comic-relief school bully and his sycophant. They don't hold a candle to Bulk and Skull.

Bios revealed by Toei on the Kyuranger characters. Lots of potential story arcs.

ShishiRed/Lucky:
Like his name indicates, Lucky was born with the luck of the universe on his side. A naive young man, he transcends the boundaries of being a positive thinker with his strong will and is able to turn problems into chances. He often involves himself with happenings in the universe that have nothing to do with him to help those in need.

SasoriOrange/Stinger:
A cool and taciturn warrior of mystery. He was originally a member of the enemy, Jaku Matter, but appeared suddenly in front of Lucky and the others one day bearing the mark of the Kyuranger, the SeizaBlaster on his arm. Who is he really?

HebitsukaiSilver/Naga Rei:
A young man from the Hebitsukai constellation, whose people threw away "emotion" to avoid conflicts. Having met Balance, a being full of emotions, and working in tandem with him, he has developed a curiosity for them and studies them.

ChameleonGreen/Hamii:
A young woman from a race that knows Ninjutsu. She seems to be the age of a high school student. Her emotions are usually all over the place and she has vivid expressions.

KajikiYellow/Spada:
A man who is aiming to become a Universal Cook; and the Kyuranger's warrior chef of their ship, the Orion. He acts like a parent to the other Kyuranger, and is very reliable. He can cook just about everything, but at times he has a tendency to be less than sincere.

OokamiBlue/Garu:
Friends from his constellation were destroyed by Jaku Matter; a Beast-Man warrior who has lost his pride. But perhaps, meeting Lucky may just change his fate...

TenbinGold/Balance:
A mechanical lifeform abundant with emotion who acts in tandem with Naga. He is proper and is able to paint a picture with his words, but is also a bit frivolous.

OushiBlack/Champ:
Champ is a fighting robot from the Taurus star system, and was born on a manufacturing planet. He is trying to chase down the mysterious man who killed his creator. He has a speech habit when he powers up, saying "1, 2, 3, Mou!" (Mou is most closely translated to Moo)

WashiPink/Raptor 283:
Android Pilot of the Kyuranger's mother ship, the Orion. She is serious and dedicated to her mission. However, no one seems to realize that she is in fact, prone to wild delusions like a little kid.

Shou Ronpou:
The Kyuranger's commander. He tries to give off the persona of being the "Strongest Ever", but his real character is like an old man. Even in the worst of times he keeps a proper tone, but has a bad lineage. Who is he really?!

I just got around to see clips from Ninja Steel

I'm actually surprised at how good condition the Mig(boukenger villain suit was in, considering how long ago Overdrive and Boukenger was.

Since Christopher posted about Ninja Steel, I figured I'd follow suit.

Return of the Prism was a significant step up in quality from the Dino Charge premiere, Powers from the Past, which suffered from structural issues, a feeling of incompleteness, and putting the lion's share of its focus on two extremely annoying and unlikeable characters in Tyler and Shelby, tossing them together for no discernible reason and expecting us as an audience to just accept them as allies/teammates.

By contrast, Return of the Prism, although it mirrored the structural format of PftP in several respects, hearkened back to episodes like Prelude to a Storm and The Road to Corinth wherein we were introduced to a trio of very likeable Rangers - who aren't just tossed together but are given a chance to interact with one another before becoming Rangers in a way that is organic - in an open-and-shut adventure that also laid the groundwork for more story

Watching the episode also put me in mind of Operation Overdrive, which is the last season of the show that we got where the quality of the actual content belies the crappiness of the theme song.

Like Christopher, I too like that Kelson Henderson is back with the franchise in a starring capacity, and am interested in finding out more about his character, Mick.
