Power Rangers

Well, I just tracked down the Go-Busters soundtrack playlist available on YouTube. It's nice to hear most of my favorite cues in the clear, but I was disappointed that it was missing one of the best. There were two cues that seemed to be for the really dramatic moments, and one of them is included (starting at about 3:00 in the track titled "The Beginning of Fate"), but it's missing the other, the cue that tended to accompany the most intense climactic moments and most impassioned heroic speeches (sort of a slower, more poignant version of the melody starting at 2:00 in "It's Time for Buster"). That's a shame. It's also missing Escape's leitmotif. I guess the soundtrack volumes featuring those aren't available on YouTube.

Alas. Those are the breaks and Kyoryuger went back to the tried and true formula to make up for Go-buster lackluster performance

How does Toei get past their biggest slump in recent years? They fall back on a kid favorite; Dinosaurs!

Year in Review: Failure of Go-Busters?

Some musing by someone on why Go-busters failed
http://henshingrid.blogspot.com/2012/12/year-in-review-failure-of-go-busters.html

It was so bad that at the annual meeting with toy stores and sellers that usually reveals the 1st toy catalog. Bandai flat out said "This show will be lighter and more fun"

Some musing by someone on why Go-busters failed

Most of those "reasons" seem pretty superficial to me, but I guess I'm not a kid. I liked Go-Busters quite a bit, and much of what I liked was the stuff that "didn't work" -- the departures from formula, the more serious story arc (although it had plenty of humor to balance it), and focusing on story and characters rather than being constantly inundated with new mechas. So my ideas of what seasons are worth seeing may differ from the public's opinion of the most successful ones.

But I have been pondering one imperfection: namely, the attempt at a "spy" theme didn't really work. They had superficial nods to that idea with the sunglasses motif (although that's more Secret Service/FBI than spies, I think) and the weapons that transformed from cameras and binoculars. But you can't really do a secret agent story about people who wear brightly colored costumes to fight invading monsters and use a giant robot to fight other giant robots in the middle of the city. So it wasn't a theme that really went with the Super Sentai format. Although I quite liked the jazzy '60s touches in the music as it went for sort of a James Bond or Mission: Impossible motif (and even a bit of Pink Panther at one or two points).

Okay, here's a minor Go-Busters mystery I can't crack. All the Buster Vehicles had letter-number identifiers -- Hiromu's was CB-01, Ryuuji's was GT-02, Youko's was RH-03, Jin's was BC-04, J's was SJ-05, and Tategami Lioh itself was LT-06. Now, in most of those cases the letters are clearly the English initials of their animal and vehicle modes -- Gorilla/Truck, Rabbit/Helicopter, Beetle/Crane, and Stag-beetle/Jet. So the C in CB-01 no doubt stands for Cheetah, but its vehicle mode is a race car, so what does the B stand for? And LT is Lion something, but Lioh's vehicle mode is a motorcycle. And the Japanese words for those vehicles don't fit the initials either.

I suppose it's possible they both break the pattern -- maybe the B in CB-01 stands for Buster and the T in LT-06 stands for Tategami. But it's odd that they'd be inconsistent.

Lion Trike. A three wheeled motorcycle

Oh, I didn't think of that.

CB-01 was Cheetah buster I believe

Hmm, okay... On reflection, I guess the difference between CB-01 and the others is that it has its own independent MegaZord mode, Go-Buster Ace, in addition to its animal and vehicle modes. So while the others' initials represent their animal and vehicle modes, this one's initials are for its animal and MegaZord modes. Although then you'd think it would be CG for Go-Buster or CA for Ace. (However, BC-04 also has an indepenent MegaZord mode, Go-Buster Beet, yet it's named for its animal and vehicle modes like the others.)

Today's Dino Super Charge, "Love at First Fight," was kind of weird, with the monster being a transformed Vivik (one of the faceless grunts), who turned out to be female and to have a personality. Generally one assumes the grunts are just mindless drones, so giving them sentience and gender raises a lot of issues. Although the monster's counterpart in Kyoryuger was a male drag-queen character, Beautiful Zoreamer (a pun on the song "Beautiful Dreamer" and Zorima, the original name of the Viviks). Heaven forbid we allow non-heteronormativity into an American kids' show.

I wonder why, when the monster was disguised as Brittany, they dubbed that actress's voice with the monster's voice. Why not just cast that actress as the monster's voice in the first place? Just get an actress who can do two different voice characterizations.

Chase's girlfriend Kaylee is another character I totally forgot about over the long midseason hiatus. She was introduced in episode 4 of the season, "A Date With Danger," that odd one where she fell in love with the Black Ranger without realizing it was Chase and we got extended scenes of a costumed Power Ranger taking a girl on dates. It's only been 7 episodes since then, so Chase's feelings have deepened quickly.

Also, having just seen Go-Busters -- where the relatively small team was constantly splitting up to deal with different simultaneous crises -- I found myself wondering why it was so urgent for Chase to keep breaking his dates and go into action when they've got eight other Rangers to choose among by this point. With an essentially double-sized team, there should be a lot more flexibility about who gets sent in on a given call.

Congratulation to Gokaiger. 5 years later and it's trending Twitter in Japan and Worldwide

The entire Gokaiger cast return for a special two-part episode of Zyouhger

With Bungray after Cube Whale, the Zyuohgers stay on their guard. Suddenly, a group of pirates called the Gokaigers attack them in an effort to steal the Whale Change Gun! Utilizing the powers of the Ranger Keys, the Gokaigers can transform into other Super Sentai! Since we’ve last seen them, the Gokaigers have obtained the Ranger Keys from the Go-Busters to Ninningers!
However, after Bungray resurrects past Sentai villains (Doukoku, Zed, Enter & Escape, Deboth, and Brajira), the Gokaigers team up with the Zyuohgers to defeat them. These villains are no match for the power of the Whale Change Gun and the Ranger Keys.

The Champion of Champions, Zyuoh Whale, uses the Whale Change Gun to transform. In the past, the original Zyuoh Whale was the Ancient Zyuman King Cetus! He awakened the power of the Grand Champion Cube, which transformed into the Whale Change Gun. Cetus fought against a mysterious monster using the power of Zyuoh Whale.
Now, in the present, Yamato inherits Cetus’s will and similarly awakens the Grand Champion Cube’s power to use the Whale Change Gun. As Zyuoh Whale, Yamato fights against Bungray who is overwhelmed by its power. The newest iteration of Ginis’s robot, Gift Custom, attacks but Yamato summons Cube Whale and it transforms into Dodecai Oh! Utilizing the Ocean King Spear, Dodecai Oh fights against Gift Custom. However, it seems that the grand beast that Bungray was after on Earth is none other than Cube Whale!

Dino Supercharge gave us another episode with the Rangers acting silly, "Catching Some Rays," though parts of it were from the original Sentai footage. It's weird that a "summer vacation"-themed monster complete with surfboards and ice cream cones on its body was interpreted as a relic of the Paleolithic, but I guess that was necessary given Kyoryu Blue's prominence in the original episode, requiring this to be a Koda focus. (Although I guess they could've come up with a different plot for him.) The plot about Kendall's control-freak grandmother didn't go the way I expected, since it had Kendall just expressing appreciation rather than asserting her right to make her own decisions. Also, I was expecting the second lens to be the Blue Energem.

Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger

The basic theme revolves around space.

Anything else is rumor at this time

Kyu- could be "9" as in planets or rescue "Kyukyu"

It's all speculation. Bottom line

SPACE

Next year will be the 20th anniversary of Megaranger too

But there aren't NINE planets anymore... ;)

We could do with a hard sci-fi sentai show, it's been a while. I loved Gobusters but the iterations since then have been on the more juvenile / fantasy / magical slant, so we're due. I wonder if they'll balance it out with magical space monsters as their mecha. :)

As it stands, tehy don't always do it, but whatever they DO end up doing should thematically balance the Kamen Rider show of the time as well. Ex-Aid has the odd combination of doctors and gamers as its theme (though it can't be wierder than dinos and samba dancing, so...) but it's still up in the air as to what the next Sentai show will be except space-y.

My next tokusatsu entry to watch is KR Fourze which is high-school / space themed. Should help set me up for whatever Kruranger is.

Okay, it looks like it's actually Kyuuranger, and it's using the katakana for kyu-u rather than the symbol for 9, although that doesn't necessarily mean anything, since they usually use katakana for the team names. But according to my Japanese dictionary, kyuu can mean "globe." So maybe it's Space Task Force Planet Rangers, essentially.

Or maybe it's supposed to be Q Ranger, rendered phonetically. Maybe something to do with "quantum" technology.

But there aren't NINE planets anymore... ;)

Maybe there are, since there's increasing evidence of an undiscovered outer planet. Of course, the number of known planets has changed often over the centuries since the telescope was invented, so it's unwise to get attached to any number. (First we thought the planets only went out to Saturn, then we discovered Uranus, then for decades we listed Ceres, Vesta, and other asteroids as planets before we discovered how small they were, then we found Neptune, etc.) Even if we prove that "Planet Nine" exists, it doesn't mean there aren't more undiscovered planets still farther out.

Yeah, I quite liked Gobusters. More in that vein would be good.

I wonder if they'll balance it out with magical space monsters as their mecha. :)

How about the Four Symbols of Chinese astronomy -- Azure Dragon of the East, Vermilion Bird of the South (often mistaken for the Firebird), White Tiger of the West, and Black Turtle of the North -- plus the Yellow Dragon of the Center? Then you've got Red, Blue, Yellow, Black, and White Rangers, a pretty standard combination. Except then you've got two dragon mecha. As for auxiliary mecha, they could draw on the Chinese zodiac. (This scheme would basically be emulating Digimon Tamers, which featured twelve Digimon "Devas" based on the zodiac and four "Sovereigns" based on the Four Symbols.)

Star Trek is celebrating 50 years and Star Wars is back. Perfect time for a space theme

I think the collectibles should be hand sized spheres that represent each planet.

It would be like the Power Spheres/Gumballs from Hurricanger.

Power Rangers Ninja Steel has gone through a casting change.

Chantz Simpson, the actor who was originally announced to be playing Calvin, the Yellow Ranger, has left the series (for currently unknown reasons) and been replaced by Nico Greetham.

Some interesting new information about the upcoming series Power Rangers Ninja Steel has been posted online.

Unfortunately, it seems original Ninja Steel Yellow Ranger actor Chantz Simpson has left the series for undisclosed reasons. The role of Yellow Ranger will now be played by actor Nico Greetham!

We welcome Mr. Greetham to the Power Rangers family & we wish Mr. Simpson best of luck to all future endeavors.

Power Rangers Ninja Steel is still on track to begin in January 2017! Stay tuned to TokuNation for all Ninja Steel News!

...And they're asking if the race card was played there, seeing as the original casting choice would have made it the first entirely non white roll call in franchise history. Others were quick to point out that the new guy is part South American. I guess we'll never know, but there are a thousand other reasons to recast a part after production started. Back To the Future, Aliens, Lord of the Rings...

Those bit look pretty good. Hopefully this means a full reveal is coming soon. The suits are really starting to grow on me.

Those posters are interesting. The bits of zord we see aren't blowing me away, but I don't dislike them. Hopefully we'll see the full zords soon.
