Power Rangers

Dino Super Charge began today with "When Evil Stirs." As expected, they're bringing back Heckyl from last season as the main villain, but it turns out he transforms into a more monstrous personality called Snide (a play on Jekyll and Hyde). Snide bears a strong resemblance to Zeltrax from the previous dinosaur-themed series, Dino Thunder, because his costume is that of a one-shot villain from the Kyoryuger vs. GoBusters movie, a character who was a reincarnation of Geildon, the Abaranger character that Zeltrax was based on. Whether there's any connection between Snide and Zeltrax remains to be seen, though it seems unlikely, given their backstories. It's interesting that they'd base the villain for the whole season on a one-shot monster from Super Sentai -- but then, Sledge was a wholly original monster with no SS counterpart at all.

It's interesting to note that the movie in question is not only a team-up with the GoBusters team, but also features all three dinosaur-themed teams, including the Zyurangers and the Abarangers. So I wonder if they used this villain because they plan to use footage from the movie later this season and possibly bring back some MMPR and Dino Thunder cast members. Although if they did plan that, I imagine we'd have heard something about it already. And that movie also introduced the ToQgers, so it features both of the teams that Saban has chosen not to adapt.

Anyone else recognize the actor who played Shelby's dad? He's the same actor who played Colonel Truman on RPM. (He also voiced Zeltrax on DT and played the past head of the Wind Ninja Academy in Ninja Storm's "A Samurai's Journey").

I like how they delved a bit more into Koda's past, actually revealing his discovery.

The scene where Koda returned to the empty base made me wonder: where the heck is Keeper all the time we don't see him there (which is most of the time)? He seems to only show up when it's convenient.

I thought that was James Gaylyn, but I wasn't sure.

We're posting about the movie here to, right?
It's been officially announced that Elizabeth Banks has been cast as Rita Repulsa. That is some great casting. I'm a big fan of Banks and this has definitely got me a bit more interested.

I find it an odd choice. It feels like another example of Hollywood's perennial habit of whitewashing Asian characters. Although the main Ranger cast in the movie is already quite ethnically diverse, and 80 percent of them have a different ethnicity than the original portrayers -- Zack is Asian, Trini is Latina, Billy is black, and Kimberly is Anglo-Indian. So maybe I should give them the benefit of the doubt. After all, I suppose getting the voice right is more important to the character. Plus, I don't think Carla Perez (who played Rita in original material in the show from the second season onward) was Asian anyway.

Now, the big question is: Who will play Bulk and Skull?

This movie is going to be so awful that it becomes brilliant. I really hopes Banks goes nuts with the performance and hams it up, I want over the top by Rita's standards.

But Rita was never an asian character, she was an alien witch who was originally played by an asian actress.

I don't think Banks is an odd choice at all, she can act, she can be campy and she's a big name actress and that's what the movie really needed.

I totally agree with this. I just read the news about Elizabeth Banks, and I got instantly excited. I can see her being a lot of fun to watch.

Elizabeth Banks would have never crossed my mind, but I think she's going to be a great Rita. I was under the impression that this wasn't going to be a reboot, but if sources are saying she's playing Rita, then I hope we get to see Goldar, Zordon, and maybe some Zedd thrown in there.

Maybe they'll save Zedd -- and Tommy -- for the sequel.

Three minute preview(rare we get something like this) for Zyuohger

The TV Asahi website has updated with the following summary:

It is estimated that approximately 800 million species of organisms live on Earth. However, we have only discovered about 170 million of those species. On this planet of ours’, there are still many creatures that we know nothing about…

Yamato Kazakiri, a novice zoologist, winds up lost on “Zyuland”; another world located on Earth! There, he meets four “Zyuman”; people with anatomy similar to a human’s but with animal features.

Meanwhile, the human world is attacked by the space outlaw group “Deathgalien” led by Ginis, the creator of a vicious Blood Game. From their ship, the Sagittariark, the Deathgaliens send monsters to attack Earth.

Yamato and the Zyumans cannot forgive the Deathgaliens for attacking. As proud beings living on the Earth, these five people awaken their instincts and become Zyuohger! With their “King’s Credentials” in hand, the human and Zyumans join together to fight for their home.

Sky, land, and sea! The dream team of animal kings; the strongest animal heroes in Super Sentai history are born! Don’t underestimate this planet!!

A King's Credential is a Cube with hidden power protected by the Zyuman. There are six King’s Credentials in total, which can transform into the Zyuoh Changer. When Yamato was a child, he helped a mysterious bird man who then gave him one of the King’s Credentials. While they are completely different worlds, Zyuland and the Earth are connected together by the Link Cube. The six King’s Credentials are the keys needed to open the Link Cube. — ⠀⠀⠀⠀

Do the Zyumen change back and forth between their animal forms and human forms? They seemed to keep going back and forth in the trailer there.

Is there anywhere other than Youtube to watch the original Japanese versions of the Sentai series? I'm curious to see what they are like compared to the American versions. I'd prefer to do it legally, but if there is no other way.....

Zyuranger and Dairanger were released on DVD by Shout Factory last year, and they've just announced that Kakuranger will be released in May. Hopefully more will follow.
