Power Rangers

Now there's one guy who actually paid attention in English class in high school. The language is mandatory in the local curriculum, but after six visits there, I can tell you truthfully that retention is very much optional. :)

Going through Turbo and Dino Charge on Netlix right now. Divatox really liked her bombs in Turbo, its ridiculous. Also, the morphing sequence taking about 5 years in the first part of the season, along with the fact that its mostly lame filler, was rough. but, once the cast change (and behind the scenes change, from what I've read) happened, its tightened up a bit. They are definitely still fighting the goofy Carranger footage at times, but its improving. Plus, Bulk & Skull (two of my favorite PR characters) are fully back, and not monkey's or invisible.

Dino Charge is pretty good so far. You can tell they were trying a lot harder then Samurai or Megaforce. It still has a few of the "neo saban" things (I'm glad Ninja Steel finally dropped the "Rangers Forever, _____ All together" thing, and the end of battle victory phrase), but the characters, writing and acting are a lot better then PRS or MF.

We had a Ninja Steel 2-parter this week, sort of -- more like last week's postponed episode and this week's shown back to back, but there was a loose connection with the introduction of the Gold Ranger and the Astro Zord. The first episode was a focus on Sarah, which is always good. I like it that she's the brains of the team, an inventor and polymath as well as an athlete and a general overachiever. She's like Hermione Granger with muscles. Seriously -- with the mystery of her joining four clubs at the same time, I was wondering if she had a Time Turner. But multiple holographic clones of Sarah? I like that even better. Chrysti Ane even managed to play each one with a different personality.

As for the new Gold Ranger, I'm a little surprised to see a Sixth Ranger who's so friendly from the start. Generally there's a bit more conflict or resistance before a Sixth Ranger joins the team. Although I do wonder if he'll turn out to be a double agent thanks to Madame Odious's brainwashing. I'd also say it's a safe bet that he's secretly Brody's missing brother. "Levi Weston" does sound like kind of a fakey name for a country-singing cowboy, even by the fanciful standards of Power Rangers.

It was kind of refreshing to see the Rangers actually using their ninja mode for a stealth operation, instead of using those costumes strictly for training and stock morphing sequences. Although the heavy, rubbery material of those costumes makes them rather cumbersome and bizarre-looking, especially the hoods.

It's like three things in one. Anniversary special/team-up/ power-up debut.

Interesting news about the movie:

http://www.cbr.com/power-rangers-character-with-autism/

Apparently the movie version of Billy is on the autism spectrum -- and Trini is lesbian (or bi). Nice to see them continuing to showcase diversity in Power Ranger teams. I wonder if we'll ever get an openly LGBT character on a TV Power Rangers series.

Unfortunately, most of the advance reviews of the film aren't flattering. A number of them say it doesn't really come alive until the third act.

So far it's got a 47/100 on Metacritic with 2 positive, 3 mixed, and 1 negative review.

If there's any franchise that cries out for a Jump Street-style self-aware goofing on its own rebooting, it's freaking Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. Trying to take it seriously, as a property worthy of even Marvel Studios-level self-respect, will surely end in suffering for audiences and bean-counters alike. Now, excuse me while I eat a Krispy Kreme©... the snack of child soldier heroes!

I hereby predict worldwide grosses of less than 22 Jump Street's $331m. Will they fall even below 21 Jump Street's $201m? Time will tell. (It'll certainly have a hard time matching either movie's budget multipliers.) In the meantime, I will note that the movie should totally have featured college, rather than high school kids, and been rated R. :p

I liked that Power Rangers RPM did just that. It was both the darkest and the most self-aware of the shows.

Yes -- it was both a gritty reboot and a hilarious deconstruction of the franchise. One thing I loved was how it deconstructed the conventions and cliches of the show -- by reconstructing them, commenting on them as oddities but then giving reasonable-sounding justifications for them. My favorite was the one where
they explained that the random explosions that went off behind the Rangers when they posed were the result of a discharge of excess energy from the suits -- and then had one of the Rangers blow up the bad guy by facing the other way when he morphed!!

I have never been a Power Ranger's fan but I have to say after seeing the trailer I am intrigued. I believe I will go see this when it comes out.

I'm pretty impartial when it comes to power rangers, loved the series when i was kid but haven't followed anything beyond the series post the first movie. I just got back from seeing the film and it's pretty uneven. It can't decide whether it wants to be dark and gritty or nostalgic cheese. I felt it worked best when it was edging toward grittiness. The movie is very character driven and as a result the action sequences kinda feel like a bit of an after thought. This is something a lot of origin story movies suffer from. Despite this there is plenty of good in the movie. The performances of all the actors playing the Rangers were pretty strong. They are all isolated and struggling and their problems are easy to identify with, and therefore make you care. Bryan Cranston is solid as Zordon and Elizabeth Banks looks like she is having genuine fun chewing scenery. The final battle is just as uneven as the rest of the film. The individual Zords get plenty of time to shine, but hardcore fans will probably be disappointed in regards to the Megazord. The movie is also beautifully shot, action sequences are easy to follow, Dean Israelite did a good job directing.

Despite my criticisms I'm keen for a sequel. I really liked all the characters and the performances and I'm interested in seeing more of them. The sequel just needs a good writer who can balance dark and light and we should be in for a good time.

That seems to be a pretty common experience among original-generation fans, and I think it's a shame, because all the best seasons of the franchise came after that point.

It wasn't an intentional choice. Life just got in the way I guess. Growing up, moving out, not having a tv with reception for years (mostly this reason). If i ever came across an episode from one of the various series during the couple of years i lived in a house with cable i'd watch it, but the newer series never grew on me.

Apparently JDF got kicked out of the premier at the end of the movie for using his phone. He's got a video up on his FB on the situation

Andrew Gray from Megaforce was at the premiere

Saw the movie. It was a lot like Chronicle... A group of kids acquiring new powers and exploring them while keeping the whole affair to themselves. Sure, it was one long origin piece but it worked as a decent story. The movie didn't have the Power Rangers campiness that the shows have but it still had enough familiar elements to feel like Power Rangers. The only thing that didn't really fit the tone was trying to shoehorn a campy villain into a non-campy movie.

I wonder if we'll get a sequel.
