Porthos (Book Spoiler)

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

Well... In today's society you can get your pet recreated for around $150,000.... maybe it is the same pet... just as time went by... the genetically recreated version.

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

Actually, it IS the one and only Porthos. He was assimilated during the Borg episode but no one noticed.

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

Porthos could've been cloned again and again, and that's how he "lived" that long

Or, maybe he was transported to the Ba'Ku planet initially???

A clone is possible.

The life span of a beagle is, on the high end, about 20 years.

Medical technology in Trek's time has obviously allowed humans to live into their 150s or better which is within our possible lifespan and medical technology even makes living to be 150 enjoyable and easy enough to not have suffered the determent of age. Beyond walking with a stiff gait at 137 McCoy was still very able-bodied and sharp.

Getting a dog to live as much as five times his life-span? May be outside of the "possibility" of medical science. Twice, maybe. Five times?

Hardly.

25 or 30 years? Sure.

As much as 100 years? For a dog? Doubtful.

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

Prothos, however, would be orders of magnitude older than the lifespan of a dog. No way it's Porthos. Lilely another Beagle of Archer's or even an offspring of Porthos'.

I think you took my comment a little too seriously.

But it is the old Porthos dammit. It has to be.

It simply can't be. In "dog years" Porthos would be almost 700 years old!

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

I'd like to know how it was Porthos, dogs don't live that long. I can understand Archer buying ANOTHER Beagle.

Porthos was never a name used in this movie, nor in the novelization. It was simply "Admiral Archer's prized beagle". Perhaps a great great grandpuppy of the original Porthos? Perhaps belonging to Archer's son or grandson.

So is Guinan.

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

Archer may or may not be the original, it could be his son. But Porthos is the original one, no other answer is acceptable. The old Porthos lives!! The only surviving member of NX-01. And hopefully we will see him in the next movie.

I bet T'Pol's katra is still floating around on Vulcan in a katric ark somewhere....

oh, wait....

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

Maybe Porthos was in the Nexus and escaped to try to stop Nero, but ultimately failed :(

Woof

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

1.) Never mentioned Porthos
2.) Porthos has long since died ("Let me tell you about a wonderful place called doggy heaven...and you cant turn around without sniffing another dog's but" - Homer)
3.) Admiral Archer is probably dead, but as stated before, McCoy lived to 137...plus, we dont really know how old Scotty's supposed to be or when the alleged incident took place...maybe Scotty's 30 something, meaning born in the 2220s, entered the Academy at 18 (2240s) and that's where he pulled this stunt...in that case, Archer may have still been alive, and has since died...
4.) The whole thing was an easter egg..a stretch, to be sure, but a sweet nod to what I feel was a pretty good series, considering the one that preceded it.

Dunno, Archer may've been youthenized (easy) through some sort of process or also trapped in the particle beam.

I like the idea it's the Archer we saw on Enterprise.

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

Forget the dog, how could ARCHER possibly still be alive? He'd be like what, 150 years old?

In the original timeline it was established that Jonathan Archer died the day after the 1701 was launched on a display screen in In a Mirror, Darkly. The character was 133 years old at the time of his death. He'd be 146 at the time that the nuEnterprise was launched. We also don't know just how long Scotty has been exiled at Delta Vega.

Given the current rate medical science is advancing...then by the 22nd/23rd centuries, living to 150 should be no big thing...

Hell, by then, *NOT* living to 150 could be considered unusual!

I would like to think "Admiral Archer" is our very own Captain Archer - if he lived to ~ 134 in the original timeline - then no reason it couldn't be.

The beagle is likely a different dog - I personally prefer to imagine it's a descendent or a clone of 'ol Porthos.

Here's what I'm thinking-

Archer went on to have a kid.

The kid eventually became an Admiral. He had the same love for beagles his dad did.

I've only caught that last bit in the book about the beagle, and haven't read much beyond that. (Like, haven't gotten into the book itself.)

Can someone....ANYONE...tell me why there was the comment about the beagle that appeared having odd ears?

Was something said earlier in the novel about what the dog looked like and why his ears would be unusual?

(And just between you and me, I'd like to know how and why a dog who was transported by some other transporter...and lost...would somehow end up in the Enterprise's transporter system, let alone that the system would more or less turn itself on and materialize him.)

1. The date Archer died never made it on screen so its not necessarily canon.

2. Orci and Kurtzmann have stated they meant Admiral Archer to refer specifically to the Enterprise series captain.

3. Archer was also infected with the augment virus in Divergence so it's fair to say this could cause him to live a longer lifespan.

See you had me right up until there.
