Porthos (Book Spoiler)

BOOK SPOILER!!!
I was just skipping around the Star Trek XI book, reading random passages and such, when I got to the end. It seems that Kirk and Spock were talking about the Orion women and cheating.

Anyways, it then said something appeared in the teleporter room, too small to be detected by security. The crew never knew how the dog had gotten onto the Enterprise.

Possibly Admiral Archer's prized beagle?

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

I'd like to know how it was Porthos, dogs don't live that long. I can understand Archer buying ANOTHER Beagle.
I'm also not happy about how a de-materialised dog from 6 months previous teleported on Earth or where ever it was by Scotty can suddenly re-materialise on the Ent in space for no reason.

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

damn it! I know you're new but you need to be more careful about this kind of posting. please edit your title and say "BOOK SPOILERS!!" Or please use spoiler code.

I thought this was a movie spoiler about Porthos and I've already seen it, so I clicked on your thread. I'm reading the book right now and you totally spoiled it for me :scream:

Porthos was never a name used in this movie, nor in the novelization. It was simply "Admiral Archer's prized beagle". Perhaps a great great grandpuppy of the original Porthos? Perhaps belonging to Archer's son or grandson.

No but it's used in the title of this thread so the OP thinks the Beagle mentioned is Porthos, i'm saying it can't be the Porthos from ENT.
I'd certainly never name a new dog after an old one, it's just not the right thing to do.

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

So I've been wondering, not much has been established about dogs living in the future, canonically speaking. There is nothing saying they aren't long-lived, and therefore one from the 22nd could have been alive in the 23rd century. And since Abrams and his cohorts are saying they'd like to provide various links to the other Trek series, this could be a perfect link to Enterprise. Have a scene where Kirk and Spock enter an alien night club in search of Nero. While they're looking around, they pass by Porthos. You know what would make this scene even better? Have Porthos wearing a sombrero. The potential is awe-inspiringly awesome.

Discuss.

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

Heck, for all we know something happened to the original Porthos before TATV that resulted in him living a long time - or becoming immortal.

Maybe Phlox is one *hell* of a doggie doctor!

But likely it's *another* pup Archer named in memory of the original...

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

Forget the dog, how could ARCHER possibly still be alive? He'd be like what, 150 years old?

The last time we saw McCoy (in "Encounter at Farpoint"), he was 137. 150 is not that much of a stretch for human lifespan.

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

Whoever said that Admiral Archer was Jonathan Archer? It could be his son or grandson, for all we know.

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

Breeding seems to be favored by law, regardless of the quality of the breeders. ;)

Ok, fair enough, but then why would either a) someone allow their dog to be experiment on this way, or b) Scotty risk secretly doing this on a nice little doggie (and ADMIRAL'S no less)? It's a "cute" throw away line, I realize, but if you think too hard, it makes no sense. Did Scotty have it in for Archer? He doesn't strike me as an animal hater.

or daughter or granddaughter

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

I figured he chose the admiral's dog because it would make a big splash, no pun intended. ;)

Doing it with a lab rat wouldn't garner anywhere near the attention as doing it with an admiral's dog. From the way he described the experiment, he didn't seem to anticipate that it would go awry.

And maybe the dog runs around loose around the starbase and was readily available for a distracted scientist to grab when he desperately needed a test subject. Who wants to fill out all those forms, after all? :p

He's the doggie highlander. There can be only one!

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

It is believed that Data had several cats over the years on TNG, and everytime naming the cat Spot. Even if the the Archer that is mentioned is the same Archer we knew from ENT, it is possible that he named another beagle Porthos.
I've had two cats with the name Squeak.

Re: Porthos (Spoiler)

Archer may or may not be the original, it could be his son. But Porthos is the original one, no other answer is acceptable. The old Porthos lives!! The only surviving member of NX-01. And hopefully we will see him in the next movie.

It could be Archer. He'd be 140-150 years old. Within a human lifespan given the advanced medical techniques of the 22nd and 23rd centuries.

Prothos, however, would be orders of magnitude older than the lifespan of a dog. No way it's Porthos. Lilely another Beagle of Archer's or even an offspring of Porthos'.
