Poorly treated characters

If only 1% of the audience read tie-ins, then those 800 people are almost a majority.

Err, no... ratings for Voyager were typically on the order of a few million. If we conservatively call it 2 million, then 1% would be 20,000. 800 people would be only 4% of that. "Almost a majority?" Hardly. It doesn't even reach the threshold of being statistically significant.

And Sci is right. Lots of people are willing to click "Join" on a Facebook group that sounds vaguely interesting to them, because it's easy and requires no actual commitment of time -- or because a friend asked them to sign and they went along to be polite, or just because they like joining groups on Facebook. That's just the way something like Facebook works. Or for that matter, the way the TrekBBS works. Go to the main page and scroll to the bottom, where it says "The Trek BBS Statistics." Right now, it says: "Members: 24,595, Active Members: 4,707." That means that only 20% of the people registered as members of the BBS are active participants to any degree at all. And probably only a fraction of those are devoted regulars rather than casual participants.

So even if we generously assume that 20% of those 800 members are active participants in the group, that's only 160 people, which is 0.8% of the estimated reading audience. And the real hardliners are probably only a fraction of that number, as is always the case. We're probably talking a number in the dozens, a statistically insignificant blip in the readership.

When they want to know who's going to win the next election, they ask 1000 people out of 300 million, and extrapolate.

I think the devil face indicated that was meant to be a joke :P

Yes, but they don't ask the 1000 people that have signed up for the "Barack Obama is satan!" facebook group. By which I mean, it's hardly a representative sample.

Pssst, don't spoil it! ;)

I'd still like to know more about Janeway's "erratic" behavior. Can anyone spell it out/direct me somewhere?

Or any episode where Seven of Nine does something wrong and gets away with it. But if a crew member does, they get 30 days in the brig.

To be on topic, I can't really think of too many characters that have been overly mistreated. Who would be the Rory of star trek?

I think the cannon(or is it one n) characters are treated better in the books then they ever were in the tv series. Though it would be nice if Geordi could keep the girlfriends.

It almost seems like every author wants to give him a long-term relationship, but they all give him their own idea, so it almost makes things worse. :p

I think that the degree and breadth of unhappiness that her use in Before Dishonor produced suggest that she was misused, whatever the dramatic arguments to the contrary.

I'm aware of maybe half a dozen to a dozen people on this BBS who actively object to Janeway's death, and of maybe two or three who throw temper tantrums about it. I'd hardly call that a large degree or breadth.

I'm aware of a "Bring Back Janeway" facebook group with over 800 members.
At Shore Leave two weeks ago, Kirsten Beyer had someone at her "Bring Back Janeway" panel who was completely unaware of Janeway's death in the books, and thought the panel was about bringing Katie back to the screen. (And was quite angry with Kirsten because she had not green-lit a Voyager movie yet, and was thus a sexist.)

Given this, I'd wager that a significant percentage of that 800 were not thinking about books when they clicked "like".

harry's only died, what three times? Rory's died that many times in each of his 2 seasons.

rory: what does not kill him makes him stronger. what does kill him only makes him stronger.

Hands down it has to be Janeway. Quite frankly, if my only exposure to the character was via Trek Lit then I wouldn't be a fan myself.

You know, at this point I almost want a ban on discussing Janeway in the TrekLit forum. The conversation never goes anywhere but the same old places. Some people think the character was mistreated. Some don't. It is what it is, c'est la vie, etc. etc.

Back to a more interesting topic, I think Meyers and Boyajian have been horribly screwed in every single PAD book. They're always there, but they never get any development at all.

On the other hand, they're a pair of security guards who've survived every single PAD book, so that's pretty impressive.

I'm inclined to agree. While I'm reasonably sure a complete ban is out of the question, I'd vote for some clearly labeled "Janeway-free" (JF) threads.

ETA: I miss the Elias Vaughn of the early DS9R novels.
