Poorly treated characters

I think that the degree and breadth of unhappiness that her use in Before Dishonor produced suggest that she was misused, whatever the dramatic arguments to the contrary.

So wait, what you're saying is that some people bitching on the internet make a perfectly valid portrayal of a character a "misuse" of the character? :cardie:

I totally agree with rfmcdpei, Janeway's behavior in BD was perfectly in line with her portrayal in the past, only that this time her attitude comes back to bite her in the ass.

^But Indistinguishable from Magic is a much more recent book than the others. It stands to reason that it hasn't been as widely read yet, that its spoilers are far more "current" than the other examples.

Says a guy who ruined Children of the Storm (for me anyway) because he spoiled that:

One of the ships gets destroyed!

Given that Children of the Storm isn't due for release until Thursday this week here and was the most recent release in the USA, it stands to reason that it's not been widely as read yet.

This is probably proof of an updated Godwin's Law.

So, Janeway's now XXXXX. This isn't going to end well.

That was a tally uncalled for and rude comment. Please edit your post to remove it.

well Captain Sparrow, I think it's bang on the money, she pretty much is like Hitler now in that any mention of her in a thread and the conversation goes to shit.

Janeway's Law is pretty much a done deal in the Literature forum.

Given the (non)progression of the Janeway related threads and the absolute clusterfucks that seem to occur nearly half a decade after they actually occurred concerning Before Dishonour, equating Janeway with Hitler makes perfect logical sense.

La Forge is mistreated in just about every novel. Women always shoot him down or something bad happens and he can't fix it. As if he didn't have enough problems on screen.

I'm aware of maybe half a dozen to a dozen people on this BBS who actively object to Janeway's death, and of maybe two or three who throw temper tantrums about it. I'd hardly call that a large degree or breadth.

I highly recommend that you check out Indistinguishable From Magic, by David McIntee, for justice on that front :techman:

What a coincidence! There's a novel of that same title by David A. McIntee!

James is what he must be called in the mirror universe. That, the goatee, and wearing a dagger on his belt are the are the only differences. The book is good in both universes though.

My memory of VOY isn't that great. Would someone direct me to a thread or site that (hopefully succinctly) catalogs Janeway's erratic behavior?

I haven't read Before Dishonor (so I can't really comment on her possible get-out-of-death-free card) but I'd like to remind everybody that death (of body, mind, and soul) doesn't necessarily mean the same thing in science-fiction as in other genres.

Technically, IIRC, Godwin's law refers to the invocation of Nazis or Nazism in a thread, not Hitler specifically.

So Janeway can be a Nazi without being Hitler (the gender reassignment surgery notwithstanding)

Actually I have the beard (and sometimes the dagger) in this universe...

Which makes this the evil mirror universe.

Godwin's law should be applicable to anything, not only Nazis. It's everytime someone attempts to kill a thread using an over-exaggerated killing argument.

I'm more impressed if a large number of those are active than I am if 800 people clicked "Like" or "Join" once and then forgot about it.
