Depending upon how slavishly it devotes itself to continuity, I think that it will be somewhere between Enterprise & Superman Returns in terms of its faithfulness to established canon.
It won't be a Battlestar Galactica style reboot. If that were the case, they wouldn't bother to bring Nimoy back. Abrams & Nimoy also would not have cited Captain Kirk's death in Star Trek: Generations as the reason why Shatner can't be in the movie.
