Poll: Do Star Trek fans believe in a Supreme Being?

I went with three though I can't quite shake early brainwashing that makes me cling to one, with the caveat that He is a borderline psychotic egomaniac. The Bible is a fucking scary book.

Borderline?

If the god of the bible is real and as depicted in the bible, he's the most sickening evil being in existence, that needs to be battled on every front, and put down for the good of all living beings.

Completely off base, but you're entitled to your opinion of course.

Jesus Christ my man. Learn Him. Know Him. Live Him.

John 14:6 Jesus said, "I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

Interesting Poll.

I'm absolutely stunned to see that so many Trek fans believe in God! God seems like such an antiquated concept to me.

Personally, I do not believe in any of that mumbo-jumbo.

The universe exists, period. I don't need to visualize something with a personality for it to make sense.

I think there is no God.

Nothing I've ever seen, read, heard, felt, or in any other way experienced in my life makes me inclined to think there is a God. At the same time, I can neither prove nor disprove his/her/its existance. So once I die, I may or may not find out I was wrong.
Since I've got no way of knowing, it's not something I let affect my life. Naturally, in an indirect sense it does affect me because there are others who do believe in God. But in terms of my own opinions and decisions, it is not relevant.
As I said above, I cannot prove or disprove the existance of a supreme being. However, if I had to place my bets I'd bet against. It's just WAY too convenient IMHO. I think very often the simplest explanations are the correct ones. And in this case, it seems highly likely to me that people were simply looking for a good explanation to questions they couldn't answer, something to make them feel less afraid. And God fits that description perfectly IMHO.
Again, this doesn't prove or disprove anything but it's why I'm more inclined to think that God is merely a figment of people's imagination.

I'm more of a polytheist than anything. Although pagan gods strictly speaking aren't the same as an all-powerful all-knowing god that I think most people would think of as a god. They're more like powerful spirits, so maybe by the usual monotheist view it's somewhat like atheism.

But it also don't fit the poll, so umm none of the above.

TOS had mention of God and Christ. It wasn't until the socialist slant of TNG that God was phased out. I'd think that the majority of those that voted for option 1 are TOS watchers.

Oh, and I used to be like many of the non-believers here. I needed hard data to believe. Then, God made His presence known in very tangible ways. As sure as I used to be that there was no God, I am now a thousand times more certain that there is.

I also have another take on this. I could be wrong of course, but I think that the world is now a very "me" place. People don't want repercussions or to have to answer to anyone else, including God. To disbelieve in Him is convenient in that regard.

I actually, I see it the other way around. To believe in God is extremely convenient because there's no proof. Hence you can basically interpret anything so that it fits with what suits you best. And nobody can prove you wrong since there's no factual basis.
In many way I envy people who do believe in a God. It makes many things much easier because it's a means of finding explanations. If you don't believe, you don't have that to fall back on to. You simply have to rely on what's there and the people around you.

I am a born-again Christian believer... Father, Son, Holy Spirit. I voted for number one.

That's my religion, too!

That really made me laugh! :guffaw:

I voted for #1.

We could all certainly be figments of God's imagination and then the question would be rather does God believe in you ?

Do Star Trek fans believe in a Supreme Being?

Don't see why they would. It's science fiction, not religion fiction. Some people might delude themselves into believing otherwise, but the fact is that the two are mutually exclusive.

I'm not. It's just a show and a lot of people like it, and while some atheists no doubt fantasize about making up the majority, they don't. There are a few instances of religious bashing in Trek, but unlike some of the people on this board, for the most part Trek has been respectful, or simply not brought it up. Why would they really have reason to anyway? So religion isn't really a factor for most people who watch it, because like I said, it's just a show.

What would Jesus do?

Nothing, seeing as the guy didn't exist.

OK that's just ridiculous. Even if you deny His deity you have to concede the fact that there was once a guy from Nazareth named Yeshua (Jesus) who led quite a movement a couple thousand years ago. The historical record bears that out.

Who's that in your avatar? It looks to me like Hawk from the late seasons of the old Buck Rogers TV show.

Same here.

:vulcan: That's not logical. It's possible to be a fan of a TV series without agreeing with all of the personal views of its creators. Great science fiction has been written by people coming from vastly different perspectives on religion.

One of the reasons I enjoy science fiction is that it deals with those questions that are so important to us as humans. And I have found thinking about those questions to be enriching whether I agree with the person asking them or not.

Hmm, I think the question that comes to my mind in relation to this one is: Is Benny Russell God? :D

Sorry.

Seriously. From all I can tell, I exist. Whether I'm a figment of somebody's or something's imagination has no implications on my life since I can neither prove nor disprove either option. In any case, it's not something I can use to base my actions in every day life on.

None of the above.

I believe (IMHO) that a concious, intelligent Supreme Being is responsible for the creation of the universe. He doesn't "look after it" because he created time and is therefore atemporal and does not need to make further changes to the original design of the universe, since the entire universe was created at once, including the whole of time. But he doesn't leave humans alone to sort out their problems; he created humans in order to have a relationship with them, and therefore has a lot of interest in the affairs of humans and interacts with them.

My belief is based on the fact that I have directly interacted with God myself (or so I believe).
