Yeah, I can agree with that. I mean, I'm not even that familiar with his work at large, but he's been *so* prolific.

Would any one Star Wars film make the top 10, though?

I would say Empire probably should easily make the top 10. Even some of the incidental music from Empire is memorable like The Asteroid Belt (or whatever it's called)

Edit - not to mention the love theme, Yoda's theme, the march, Cloud City themes...

Do you mean his top 10 overall or for Star Wars? Because except for the Imperial March and the main theme (if even both of those) I don't know that any Star Wars music makes his Top 10. ;)
Princess Leia's and Yoda's themes are pretty iconic, IMO. But lets not forget this and this. :)

For what it's worth, the American Film Institute's Top 25 Film Scores includes 3 by John Williams. Star Wars (ANH) came in first overall with Jaws and E.T. at 6 and 14 respectively; there were eight others nominated that didn't make the list (AI, Close Encounters, The Cowboys, Harry Potter 1, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindler's List, Superman, The Witches of Eastwick - gleaned from his Wiki page). So apparently the AFI doesn't count Empire as one of his Top 10 - but says New Hope is his best. First overall is quite the high praise. That list also of course doesn't include any of his Olympics or other non-movie work.

And - thanks for pointing those out. I'd actually listened to both of them earlier. My overall point was that the music of the prequels is anything but shit and does a lot to elevate them. I'm willing to say they weren't as good as the originals (though I'll defend Augie's dammit :p).

ETA: Lots of editing, sorry.

While I disagree that the music lifts the prequels up any, I can say with certainty that I have very little problem with the music and I don't think it contributes to the awfulness in any way. Except Augie's. May you burn in the fiery pits of hell for all eternity for liking it ;)

Like it or not, Episodes I-III does exist. You will learn in a GARGANTUAN way how big they are on 2-10-12, and how insignificantly small haters of The Prequels are. Try going to a future Star Wars Celebration. The Prequel Trilogy fans there are legion. I count myself an un-apolegitic fan among them.

It's not a competition. It really isn't. I'm glad that you love the Prequels. More power to you. I enjoyed watching them when they first came out, I even bought the DVDs. But, when I think about Star Wars, I don't find myself gravitating towards the Prequels. When I think about Star Wars, Han, Luke and Leia come to my mind. Lines from the OT drift into my memory.

I'm sure the Upconverted Prequels will make lots of money. I'm sure there will be people with their lightsabers there on opening day. I'm sure of it.

But, it won't be me. It won't. 1. Upconversion ain't so great. 2. They are mediocre films set in a world that I love. So... I'll just wait for A New Hope. And Empire. And Jedi.

By that point, I'll have kids, and I can take them to the ones that I love.

Fine. But I get that glowy energy-ball thing and 16 year old Natalie Portman. :p

Err... :alienblush:

^ That's a great way to put it. Though I'm not quite sure I'll even be going to see 4-6, because the SE changes bug the piss out of me. But, I may also have a desire to see those in the theater again so we'll see if I can get past my SE irritation when those hit.

Hear hear! :techman:

My call - $80 million domestically, tops.

I'll give ILM a benefit of a doubt. James Cameron himself not only gave his blessing, but also had been encouraging Lucas to do this for years. In fact, I read an interview with him just recently in which he slammed "Clash of the Titans" for being upconverted without the director (Louis Leterrier) being involved in the process.

Also, I'd be willing to bet that, since this is George Lucas, these movies will be more than just upconverted (meaning expect some new CGI and stuff  ).

To be fair, I was 14 when it came out. And it's probably legal in hell anyway. :p
Beleve it or not, in my little country 14 IS the legal age of consent.

With premium tickets prices for 3D, I would actually guess higher.

But, meh.

Are they releasing a new one every year? So, Star Wars will be in 2015?

Anyway, it's 13 in my state, but a four year (or more) age gap between partners makes it illegal before age 18.
Sounds OK enough. Over here, a 40 year old pervert can legally fornicate with a 14 year old, if I'm not mistaken (and I don't think I am). Sadly, that's the least of our problems right now.

Part of the problem I think with the music in II and III it's that how badly edited it is. Pretty much the whole Geonosis part of the film are either tracks from TPM or music from earlier in the film. Plus it's in really odd places at times-why is the Trade Federation march heard when we first see the clones (Although there's a cool version of the Imperial march at the end)? ROTS also suffers from this, mainly when Anakin marches on the temple, and also during the space battle in the beginning (Using music from the Pod Race, for crying out loud!).

Granted, ROTJ does use some of ESB's music when Lando and Wedge destroy the Death Star (The music when they rescue Luke, that is). The soundtracks have the original music for this scene, which is more heroic.

I actually admire ESB's more restrained soundtrack. Although it's got great music, ESB is also the most musically silent of the films. The majority of William's score is actually not in the film, but can be found in the soundtracks.

The soundtrack to ESB is always going to be special to me, if for no other reason than the Imperial March.

This. I love the Finale/End credits though, according to iTunes i've played it 19 times through, but im sure if it counted the amount of times I stopped before the end and rewound it must be much higher.

I love ESB's music.

I'll probably get some hate for this, but oh well.

I realize the prequels are not that good. Terrible acting, convoluted plots, etc. However, I enjoyed them for what they were. If anything, it's Star Wars. When they are re-released on 3D starting next year, yeah, I'll probably go and see them. Why? Because it's Star Wars. On the Big Screen. In 3D.

Say what you will about the prequels (and, as Plinkett pointed out, there is a lot!), but I bet those films are going to be worth seeing just for the 3D aspect. The effects were amazing when they first came out. I'm sure LucasFilm will spiffy them up a bit. And, knowing the dedication LucasFilm puts into their product, I bet the 3D transfer is going to look amazing as well.
