Please sell me on DS9.

Quark messed with the security system in the airlock.

Is that stated in the script?

You tell me if this is sufficiently explicit for you.

In the teaser, Odo hears something coming from one of the airlocks. When he opens the airlock to check it out, he finds Quark sitting there quietly. When they leave the airlock, the camera ominously zooms in on a device that appears not to belong there and happens to be in a spot to which Odo and O’Brien had their backs turned. (Why didn’t Odo search the airlock, when he clearly didn’t for a second believe Quark’s explanation for what he was doing there? I have no answer for that, and neither does the script.)

Later O’Brien tells Sisko that the intruders had somehow defeated the security system in the airlock. Why Sisko asks how, O’Brien says he and Odo found Quark in that airlock without a believable explanation.

In another scene, we see Quark trying to sell liquidated chains to Yeto, who Quark thought had “come all this way, braved the storm” just to make that purchase, so Quark was obviously expecting him.

When Kira confronts him and accuses him outright of helping the intruders defeat the security system and bring weapons onto the station, he just looks guilty, and makes no serious effort to plead his innocence. (When she first makes the accusation, he perfunctorily says he doesn’t know what she’s talking about; when she makes it clear she doesn’t believe his denial, he stops trying.)

I think that’s enough to condemn him beyond a reasonable doubt.

I can tell you've given this episode a lot of thought, that's cool. :techman:

They really should have put Quark's side of the story into the episode from Quark's mouth since as we've discussed, it makes no sense why he would mess with the security for them.

Do you have any theories as to why that little girl was able to smack Kira around like a ragdoll; Kira who beats up 6'+ Klingons, Cardies, Jem'Hadar, and everyone else in every other episode? :rommie:

I was a big fan of TNG during my high school years. DS9 was on when I was in college mostly, and I didn't really watch any tv then, so I never watched more than a handful of episodes.

It was only fairly recently that I sat down and watched DS9 from beginning to end. Man, was I surprised.

All I can say is: it's a special ride. You really owe it to yourself to set aside some time for it ;)

For me what sets DS9 apart is that it is struggling for creative freedom within the confines of the Trek episodic formula, like a poet struggling for freedom within the confines of the sonnet form. Sometimes the best creative efforts result from an imposed constraint of some kind, and I think that DS9 is an example of that.

this, absolutely.

well said :)

I ask because only two of the regular characters in DS9 are "Human".

;)

So out of Miles O’Brien, Benjamin Sisko, and Jake Sisko, which one isn’t human? Don’t try to escape this one by saying Jake isn’t a regular.

Bashir’s human too, just with a few little tweaks.

Jake was not a regular ;)

Miles and Bashir are human, yep.

I am not going to say anything else as I do not want to spoil the show for the OP. if you want to argue about it, PM me.

the crux of the matter is that out of all the shows, DS9 had the MOST number of alien characters in significant/regular/recurring roles. no other Trek series did that.

The one thing I had to get used to is that the show is mainly stationary. While TOS, TNG, and VOY are on starships whose mission is exploration, DS9 takes places on a space station. I didn't think I'd like it either, but after the first few eps I was hooked.

At least give it a few eps to develop.

In my opinion, it does exploration better than the others because rather than delve into alien of the week and then they're never seen again, you get an intimate look at the cultures of the Bajorans, the Cardassians, the Dominion and it continues the study of the Klingons with Season Four that started back in TNG. For someone who's interested in Anthropology, it's a very interesting show and goes deeper than many do.

don't forget that one of DS9's very best episodes (and one of Trek's best, as well) was in Season One. ;)
Most absolutely! :techman:

Jake was not a regular
Maybe Mr. Lofton needs more fiber in his diet? :p

Actually, didn't this come up more than once? Like the Bermanator wanted to swap out Lofton for others--namely Alaimo and Robinson because he was only in a limited number of episodes per season anyway?

So, I grew up on TNG, got really into VOY when it aired on Spike a few years ago, and enjoyed all the TOS movies and most of the episodes. However, I never got into DS9 or ENT. I'd like to start watching one of those series now and don't know which one to pick. So you all are the DS9 fans, please tell me why I will love it. I already posted a similar thread in the ENT forum. Thanks in advance.

I grew up on TNG and watched VOY when I was a kid. DS9 is still my favorite series, and you can't read the relaunch until you watch all 7 seasons. That, in and of itself, is enough of a reason to start the series :).

So at the end of all this, what did the OP decide? DS9 or ENT?

Oh...and I know it was discussed a while back (while I was on vacation), but it is possible to like both DS9 and VOY. And I am proof of that.

However, I agree with the OP in what they said about VOY being sort of a tease in the end. I'd never quite thought of it that way, but I actually think that characterization is quite accurate. The payoff ended up being not at all what you'd hoped. Rather underwhelming ending, in fact, to a show which had so very much potential.

Still, there are some good things about VOY that I enjoy. And in the end, it's probably my third favorite Trek, after DS9 and TOS, respectively.

I watched DS9 over the winter/spring and then started on VOY, when I burned out. But VOY definitely starts off well - best pilot of all the series I think -

DS9 starts out strongly reminiscent of TNG. Some of the S1 eps could easily have been TNG eps, such as "Move Along Home". (That one could have been a TOS ep also) But they are strong. I was pleasantly surprised how well DS9 hits the ground running compared to TNG.

DS9 gets the kid thing right - Jake redeems the whole concept.

I can't say enough about DS9. It has great sci-fi eps equal to any of the great ones in TNG, plus some great long serial story arcs, especially S6-7.

Voyager fans don't generally like DS9. That's how it is. They're very different kinds of shows.
I love both shows, and I know some others who feel the same way, so you're wrong. :)
Voyager fans don't generally seem to like Enterprise either, which I find odd since the two shows are almost indistinguishable.
:vulcan: Hm, I guess I didn't notice that. :)

People will say the first season was the weakest but I found a lot to like in it.
Same here. I've just suggested some episodes from S1 to a guy on an other board yesterday and I was surprised how many good ones I've found. :)
I liked that the women on the show weren't there just for eye candy like on VOY and ENT. DS9 was also good at doing lighthearted shows that fit into the series more like TOS was able to do. They didn't feel like aberrations.
But I disagree with these two points.
Give DS9 a try- there is a reason it was on 7 years (and really it needed an eighth season but...).
Yeah, that would've been nice. :( But I'd be very happy with a direct-to-DVD movie or two as well. That new crap, I mean new movie was successful at the box office, so they'd have the money to do it. The actors should be avalaible too but sadly I doubt they'll do anything like this. :(
