Playmates Toys

I'm of the "wait and see" mindset because scaling in action figures is a weird bird. It can be called "1:18" for one sizing but measure out at either 3.75 or 4 inches. So, until I have figure in hand (probably TWOK Spock) I'm not putting much stock in the reported size.
Yeah, scaling is "fun"... like if you're into the six inch figures, and you get accurate replica cars and furniture and stuff in 1/12 scale with the idea of setting up scenes for the figures, you find that those things look a bit too small (or the characters look tall, depending on your point of view) because most "1/12 scale" figures tend to be bigger than true 1/12 scale.

Yeah, it's a lot of "fun" alright. I tend to just keep a figure that I like with me to determine if it fits, rather than assume true scaling.

Yes, looking at most of the older figures directly from the front, the lower body looks too small, even considering the deliberately more cartoony proportions. Even when playing with these as a kid I always got that impression; like why are their legs so puny? Were they trying to save on the extra plastic?

It is interesting that the scale of the new figures has been stated as 5 inches instead of 4.5 inches like the old ones. So check this out... I took your picture and shrunk 90s Picard down a little so that upper body is a little closer in proportion to the new figure:
Picture below, give it a minute to load if it doesn't show up immediately... sometimes the hosting site I use is a little slow.

The difference in lower body size alone could account for that extra half inch in size/scale.

That Picard reuses parts from the very first wave, which featured much more stylised, cartoony bodies. If you look at later waves, like the DS9 or Voyager figures, they tend to have more neutral and realistic proportions.

Checking a few of the older futures, they are usually called 4.5", but some of them are closer to 5" - Q for example. These new figures should look pretty good with the older ones.

Ah, I only got one or two DS9 figures and no VOY figures that I can remember. I probably have some of the later TNG characters. It's been a long time since I took any of them out and really looked at them, though.

They all had the oversized heads and hands, so they were never super-realistic, but the earliest TNG figures had the most exaggerated look.

I wish there was a revival of the Star Trek Micro Machines line to complement the Playmates revival. You often got more obscure ships in that line. If I recall, there were miniatures of the Bajoran freighter model (here as the Numiri ship) and the Tamarian ship model (as a Klaestron ship). They would definitely be interested in something like a Malon waste carrier.

I forgot about MMs! I have had a huge pack of them I cannot find. Probably gave them away to some needy Trek fans after ENT died. I think they were asst. ships. I hope I get a chance to replace them!

Even if all we ever get are a few reissued/updated 90s ships, that could still be really cool. Personally I'd love to see a reissue of their awesome DS9 toy, which is nearly impossible to find in the UK and goes for insane prices on eBay. Defiant and Voyager are the same.

If they do make brand new ships, I would expect it to be the Protostar first. That would be awesome, it's obvious that you could make an amazing toy out of that ship!

Yes! A Protostar must be done. Even if nothing else is reissued, not doing a Protostar is dropping the ball, big time.

Found this list of old Playmates ships. Not sure how complete it is...

...but I need all of them, and an ENT NX-01.

I don't need the All Good Things ENT, or the shuttles to get reissue but if they are limited there better be a regular series ENT-D redo. Lots of new TNG fans chomping at the bit to get one of those.

I'd like to get the Transwarping Enterprise, as my parents didn't want to get for me as I already had the Standard Enterprise-D. Looking at those picture, I've forgotten how awesome the Vor'cha and Romulan Warbird were.

I have a lot of Micro Machines still. Be nice if they came back. I miss Galoob. :(
I'd like to see them make Star Trek Micromachines that were made of the same kind of plastic that their new Micromachine car sets are made of. Something more solid instead of ultra bendy. I wonder if that's possible... Heck, I wouldn't mind if the ships were a bit deformed.

I think 3D printing is going to fill that niche. I have been on Etsy recently and found a shop that is making Micro Machine scale figures for Star Wars, which I very much appreciate.

I think if the line lasts long enough we’ll get a Protostar. But not before we get the E-D, Voyager, Defiant and Discovery.

looking at that list of ships they made, it really is glaring that we never got a Klingon D7 battle cruiser.

Well we never got an Enterprise Refit/Enerprise-A, Enterprise-C, the Reliant, or an accurate Excelsior (the one they issued reused the Enterprise-B mold)

It's a shame they never released the Cardassian Galor-class warship that was prototyped. They had some other cool unproduced items like the the TNG phaser rifle and a Romulan disruptor pistol.

It's surprising they never did a TOS Klingon battlecruiser too. We did get the Romulan and Klingon birds-of-prey though.
Maybe they still have a mold for it.

They need to work with Round2

Definitely picking those up. I expect Holo Janeway will be popular!

Love the line in the press release about wanting kids to take them out of the packaging and play with them. That's MOC collectors told!

My guess on the ship is that they are waiting to see how the Classic Phaser and Enterprise sell first. If that stuff sits chances are the Prodigy stuff will as well. Or it’s a production thing, trying to get everything to look right.

I find it interesting we are getting Prodigy stuff before DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, Picard and technically TOS.

Am I correct that Prodigy hasn't yet aired on Nickelodeon except for the pilot sometime last year?

I feel like they need to establish a fanbase first outside of Paramount+ subscribers. My fear is that these won't sell and it'll kill future releases.

Makes sense to produce toys for a current kids' show before legacy stuff from thirty+ years ago. If the line sells they'll get to them.

Ships and roleplay take longer to develop than figures. That's probably why Playmates have reused their 1990s tooling for the TOS Enterprise and phaser.
