Playmates Toys

something about the arms looks off. Like they are too skinny or something. Maybe the ball joints just cause an optical illusion or something.
I think they look extra skinny in direct comparison to the original, but not too far off from how Picard really looked. A bit on the skinny side though.

true but they were all “main” ships, like both the Klingon and Romulan Bird of Prey. We never got a Malon waste carrier or anything like that.

I wish there was a revival of the Star Trek Micro Machines line to complement the Playmates revival. You often got more obscure ships in that line. If I recall, there were miniatures of the Bajoran freighter model (here as the Numiri ship) and the Tamarian ship model (as a Klaestron ship). They would definitely be interested in something like a Malon waste carrier.

With appendages that don't move.

I take great comfort knowing that there is an alternate universe that exists out there where those uniforms were in fact used in the generations movie. At the very least in this part of the multiverse, we get to see Geordi wearing one in the deleted interrogation scene with Soran.

I'm also hoping Playmates releases the Captain Janeway with her bob haircut from seasons four through seven.

The Malon were introduced after the main ship stuff was already over. They only made Voyager itself, which was awsome. The TNG alien ships probably didn't sell as well, and they knew any DQ ship would only appear for a short time since they kept moving on all the time.

It's a shame they never released the Cardassian Galor-class warship that was prototyped. They had some other cool unproduced items like the the TNG phaser rifle and a Romulan disruptor pistol.

It's surprising they never did a TOS Klingon battlecruiser too. We did get the Romulan and Klingon birds-of-prey though.

The Enterprise-A was the first ship Art Asylum did after the NX-01, so they did fix that quickly!

The obvious missing ships now are the Enterprise-C and Reliant, which DST had in production for years but never actually issued.

But I gather that ships are expensive to develop, which is why I guess they've used their 1995 tooling for the TOS Enterprise. They probably wouldn't have been able to produce a brand new ship for the first wave, so I think it's good they've done this at all. I was only expecting a handful of figures.

Even if all we ever get are a few reissued/updated 90s ships, that could still be really cool. Personally I'd love to see a reissue of their awesome DS9 toy, which is nearly impossible to find in the UK and goes for insane prices on eBay. Defiant and Voyager are the same.

If they do make brand new ships, I would expect it to be the Protostar first. That would be awesome, it's obvious that you could make an amazing toy out of that ship!

I would love to see a retooled Playmates Enterprise-D with a more accurate deflector dish that glowed blue with opaque red rings painted around it!

I never did understand the original run having a transparent solid red deflector with NO lights... :(

Cost I guess - but it would be easy enough now to install a couple of LEDs behind the deflector and the impulse engine.

Yeah, I second this. For the longest time I thought my Enterprise-D toy was defective, but no, it was intentionally designed to not have the deflector light up. And why red? Of all the colors they could have chosen, they made it cherry red like the bussard collectors. Not even the teal color of the warp field grill.

In the Netflix preview picture, the bussards are blue! XD

Could the new release of a TOS Enterprise as a toy indicate that the SNW one will look similar? It could get kids and new fans confused if the new show and the new toy don't match...

There's already a poster out of the Strange New Worlds Enterprise. It's the same as Discovery season 2, maaaaaaaybe with a grill over the nacelle pylon gap, but it's hard to tell from the angle.

I'd still like to get Playmates take on it though. Having multiple buttons instead of a single button that cycles through everything would be a lot of fun. A pity they don't have one coming out now since we've got a 4K Director's Edition of TMP coming out soon.

I made a comparison image between Playmates' 1994 and 2022 versions of Captain Picard. The new figure probably will be a bit taller than the old one, but it has much more realistic proportions. That goes for the rest of the line as well. Also, it looks like ball joints are used at most of the articulation points, so the new figures should be a lot more poseable.

Yes, looking at most of the older figures directly from the front, the lower body looks too small, even considering the deliberately more cartoony proportions. Even when playing with these as a kid I always got that impression; like why are their legs so puny? Were they trying to save on the extra plastic?

It is interesting that the scale of the new figures has been stated as 5 inches instead of 4.5 inches like the old ones. So check this out... I took your picture and shrunk 90s Picard down a little so that upper body is a little closer in proportion to the new figure:
Picture below, give it a minute to load if it doesn't show up immediately... sometimes the hosting site I use is a little slow.

The difference in lower body size alone could account for that extra half inch in size/scale.

I'm of the "wait and see" mindset because scaling in action figures is a weird bird. It can be called "1:18" for one sizing but measure out at either 3.75 or 4 inches. So, until I have figure in hand (probably TWOK Spock) I'm not putting much stock in the reported size.
