Playmates Toys

They also had ones for the Defiant and Ferengi marauder -- and I don't think those ever got to market either. I think they were at oy shows though.
I had the Innerspace Defiant.

(I was a bigger fan of the Star Wars Action Fleet, since the scaling was more realistic, but I did quite like the entire Polly-Pocket knock-off genre.)

It’s a shame they never did a S2-7 Ferengi Officer. We got Quark, Rom (with mini-Nog) and Zek. But never just a random generic Ferengi Damon.

Just saw this thread on the main page and it triggered my memories of the wacky bridge crew I had as a kid, probably from getting one or two random figures per birthday/christmas for a few years. These guys went on many adventures together, though I’m not sure of the timeline.

-Captain Picard
-Cmdr. Riker w/beard
-Kirk in the GEN orbital skydiving costume never seen on screen (not that I knew that backstory as a kid, I no idea why he had that weird black and gray suit on)
-Generic TNG era shoulder pad Romulan (I usually pretended it was Spock)
-Data (all his cool little circuitry access panels that opened and shut broke off pretty quickly due to away missions)

I think I might have had a Troi or a Crusher as well but I can’t remember. I definitely also had the type II phaser, loved those sound effects. And I remember being so disappointed that the communicator was a giant chunky heavy ugly thing, not understanding that 24th century battery technology was not yet available.

The communicator was mostly empty. The electronics could have easily fitted into a much slimmer form-factor. I suspect they deliberately oversized it so that parents thought they were getting more value for money. They did the same when they released their hilariously giant type 1 phaser.

Actually, come to think of it the speaker was massive. That was probably the limiting factor at the time!

Maybe be of interest to some here. There's a new Kickstarter launching soon for a book covering the Playmates 4.5" figures and playsets, including the 2022 revival.

The same team did a really nice book covering the Character Options Doctor Who range.

So Tomy has barely marketed it yet, but they've recently opened up crowdfunding for a 32" diecast (20lbs!) TOS Enterprise replica. Spinning nacelle caps, saucer separation (referenced but never seen during TOS!), lit/articulated shuttlebay, fully lit w/ blinky lights, detailed paint from the original 11 foot model, the works.
Gary Kerr, who consulted on the restoration of the original model at the Smithsonian, worked with Tomy on this and had this to say:

Literally the first post.

My two cents. If the campaign only charges the contributor if the goal gets reached/products will get made (which I think is always the case with Kickstarter) I would say pass, if they are actually collecting money ahead of time, yeah no.

Not to be pedantic or anything, but would the Tomy products also not technically fall under the same category, since they use the same model to see if they reach $X?

I suppose so. This is new to me.

It looks like that Tomy link is no longer active…?

The amazing Scorpion set! Been looking for a loose 8472 for quite a while, the set was always quite expensive with shipping, and now I found it for $10 :D
I later cured the disease with acetone to get a regular Kim ;)

The 8472 figure is incredibly detailed and accurate, and it was actually outsourced to Art Asylum, who later got the license.

They also had a combat action Worf for $2, so I got him for the goodies that I didn't have yet. His shoulders didn't have the ridges, since it was actually a TNG mold they then decided to give a FC paint job. The missing FC details can simply be added with sharpies, and he's a great companion for the other figures in that diorama box :D

Hey everyone! I hope you won't mind me popping in here to give a few more details about the To Boldly Go Figure book mentioned up thread. I understand links to fundraisers aren't allowed, but I'm sure you can work out where to find us!

We produced a book last year covering the Doctor Who action figures from Character Options, and we've just launched the Kickstarter for the next volume, taking in the Playmates 4.5" figures (both the original 1990s ones and the short-lived recent revival). Brand new high resolution photography for every figure, variants, playsets, shuttle craft... it's a beautiful tome if I say so myself, with newly-written information for every figure. Also an incredibly useful reference for which accessories pair with which figures; if you're anything like me then they've all ended up in the same box over the years...!

We've been working away on this for the last eight months, and it's very much a "by the fans, for the fans" project. We're especially thrilled to have tracked down all the rarest figures (most of which, to be fair, were already in the collection of our editor), and we've managed to get shots both in and out of packaging for a number of figures. We're also in discussions with fans about including some prototype figures, as those went down very well in the Doctor Who edition.

As I say, I hope you won't mind my popping in to share this with you all - I hope you'll check it out, we're currently 25% funded with just over three weeks to go, so all to play for! There's various cover options available at different levels, including some bespoke 1-of-1 covers, for a truly unique edition (and mostly because I was determined to get an Andorian on a cover somewhere).

Good luck! I have already backed it, so I hope it's successful. The Doctor Who book was a real labour of love.
Thank you so much, Tomalak! (A Romulan compliment feels dangerous...)

It was while working on the Who book that the desire to do this one came to us - I happened to turn around and spy Gary's Trek figures, and as soon as I'd seen Red Data and all the Seven of Nines I knew we were in with a chance...!
