Playing with the refit Enterprise...

Just think how much changes in 20 years in car design aesthetics, never mind cutting edge stuff like computing and aircraft design. We also should factor in the alien influences on the Federation, since those new engines are supposed to be the product of research carried out on another planet entirely. There may be a lot of humans working for the Feds, but not exclusively so. I think sticking on the old engines, the thing that would almost certainly be prime candidate for replacement and upgrading in a refit, is just not right.

This looks WAY cool... I would love to see this baby in 3D.

I don't mean to be overly-harsh, but when I saw that the first thing that popped into my head was, "Captain Proton would -love- that!" To me it actually looks less advanced than the TOS ship.

Disclaimer - I'm no artist, and I didn't entirely read what came previously. Just...that pic really stands out.

DonIago, not harsh at all:), in fact, absolutely right on. I was
going for a pre-TOS look, with a blatant '50's lines and so forth. We ended up naming it the "Metaluna"!:)

BolianAdmiral, have you seen the "Another small, old ship" thread...MadMan1701 built an incredible model of it, all while recuperating from surgery! Really incredible work.

Anyway, I've been pondering TMP "what-if's" for years, can't wait to see some more sketches and ideas in this thread.

The thing I miss most in later designs is that big red pennant-and-number on the nacelles. I'd have kept the outer nacelles halves as solid with no grill, and kept that pennant (or at least the newer version of it). I have no actual complaints about the rest of the ship.

That looks interesting but the original is still better.
In fact I do like this...but the vented nacelles make more sense to me with how much plasma you're pumping back there, It has to go somwhere.

But is that what those outer vents were for? Or were they just heat radiators? And why didn't the original nacelles need them?

Maybe just that more powerful engines need more heat radiator surface area?

Maybe. But we are just talking about a Hollywood model here. In that sense, I prefer Forbin's revision to the one filmed because it looks nicer, has less model surface devoted to stupid glowing things, and has better continuity with the original television design.

Except they didn't glow. :)

Thank Ghu.

Marian

You know, you're absolutely right. I could swear I remember seeing the outboard grills dimly lit in a later movie, but a quick review of TrekCore proves me wrong. Even so, I still prefer Forbin's take.

Some later DS9 episodes did inflict it on a Miranda or two, though. Red glow in the acquisition sinks too. Blech.

ah-HA! I knew I wasn't crazy!

No, I'm as sane as ten sane men! In any event, this must be the source of the misfiring neuron. Thanks!

This is a CGI shot, right? It looks like the aft end of the warp nacelles is different too. It would make sense that the ship's would have a technical upgrade sometime in their ... what ... 100+ year service life?

Actually, it looks like a low-poly mode. Note that the outboard mounted "intercoolers" or whatever are merely painted on and appear inboard and outboard. The "skegs" are missing, too.

Actually, they went through several AMT models while filming those fleet scenes. It's a mix of CGI and physical models.

As for changes I'd make to the refit, three words: Deuterium slush tanks.

Y'see, they go so wound up designing the warp core and finding a place for the antimatter pods, they forgot about the "matter" part of the matter/antimatter reactor and didn't make any provisions for any fuel tanks. This is by Andrew Probert's own admission.

Thanks to the way they designed the thing, the only place to put any tanks of appreciable size is in the saucer, on either side of the impulse engines (on the starboard side, between the Rec Deck and the impulse engines, with the port side mirroring the starboard).

Perhaps most of the matter they need is in the linear intermix chamber already. For fusion reactor running, though, yes - we'll need to put some tanks on her.
I agree with your placement.

The Galaxy class had its sizeable deuterium slush tank located just below the rear of the base of the neck, right above the intermix chamber. I think you need a pretty large tank for any decent range, just the stuff in the feeds to the chamber wouldn't be more than a reserve.
