Planning on Re-Watching TNG again starting next week...

Captain Zog

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
and I don't want to watch it in any particular order. Any suggestions as to what would be a good episode to start with? Please don't suggest "Encounter at Farpoint" because I've no interest in watching the series in order this time. Also note I don't have Season 6 on DVD yet, so no Season 6 eps please.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Are you planning on watching ALL episodes? If not in order, then how are you going to keep track of which ones you have yet to see? Seems like unnecessary work to me. It aired in order, watching it in order is the way to go.

You should do what I do and just watch the good episodes. :) In the case of season 1, that means "The Big Goodbye", "Hide and Q", and "Datalore". I recommend the first two mostly for continuity purposes, since "The Big Goodbye" establishes the holodeck, which obviously is significant in many, many later episodes and "Hide and Q" because any episode with Q can't be all bad (although this is the weakest of the bunch, aside from the series opener) and Q's history is also good to know for subsequent episodes. "Datalore" is just a very dramtically effective and solidly written and acted episode, much moreso than most of the episodes in season one.

I, too, like the idea of rewatching only the good episodes. Whenever I get around to watching TNG all the way through again, that's exactly what I'll be doing. So...

The "Good or Better-than-Good" episodes of Season 1 (in airdate order):

The Battle
Hide and Q
The Big Goodbye
Datalore
Angel One
11001001
The Arsenal of Freedom
Skin of Evil
We'll Always Have Paris
Conspiracy
The Neutral Zone

Edit: I realize the OP said "not in any particular order." Outside of chronological order, the only other way I can think to do it (in an interesting way) is to go by theme (Data episodes, Picard episodes, etc.). Or, better yet, if it was me, I'd skip 'character-themed' episodes and just watch the eps that feature the whole crew...

Most of the time I browse through the discs and search for an episode I feel I haven't watched in a long time. I have the advantage of a very poor memory, so many episodes – although I may have seen them a year or two ago – feel very new to me. Usually I tend to forget the most plot points.

i love" the naked now" as it refers to a tos episode. and try "enterprise past" as an interesting twist.

I like the suggestion of watching just the good episodes. Obviously "good" being a subjective term for the episodes you enjoy. Following on from that, you could do what I've done in the past - just watch some favourite scenes, or parts of episodes you enjoy and ditch the rest.

Other suggestions: watch the episodes that have come out well in voting polls, or watch episodes that have a good rep that you don't rate highly, to see if your opinion has changed over time.

Angel One

Are you kidding? Please tell me, because I WANT to understand, what makes this a good episode of TNG for you? I loathe it and think it's one of the worst pieces of crap this series has to offer.

How about not watching the "good" episodes? I find that I've watched ones like Yesterday's Enterprise, All Good Things, Darmok etc enough times that they just don't have the same impact. Even Best of Both Worlds didn't quite hit the spot (you can tell which episodes I had on video).

On the other hand, the last episode I watched was Devil's Due, which I hadn't seen for years, and only twice at the most. I thought it was absolutely superb on all counts. You could do worse than start with that one. Dark Page really impressed me too - I watched that recently because it seemed the most fitting after Majel's death, and I was not disappointed. A real tear-jerker under the circumstances.

I tried a similar thing with The Masterpiece Society, of which I had no recollection, but unfortunately, there was a reason for that. It turned out to be utter garbage, so I assume I'd blanked it from memory. Violations too - I swear this is one of the very worst. Another Troi mind-rape story with a weird love interest? I'd rather watch Shades of Grey.

At least with Masks you get to enjoy Brent Spiner making a complete tit out of himself, and the brilliant glazed expession that Stewart has on his face for the entire 42 minutes. Even he can't quite believe the absurdity of the situation. On the other hand, Frakes just looks pissed off, which is quite funny to watch. Anyone who claims they could have done an eighth season really needs to be forced to watch the entirety of the seventh - not just Pegasus, Parallels, Pre-emptive Strike and All Good Things.

hm. I wanted to watch TNG from beginning to end, but I dunno if I can bear watching season 1... Right now I usually just chase down episodes that involve either Wesley Crusher or Riker being super-dramatic. Can't stand Worf episodes. (I know, shoot me now)

Other than that, I just watch whatever is on Mondays on Sci-Fi.

:lol:I love how people announce this.

Do you mean hoe people announce they're going to watch TNG again? I like it. It makes me feel that TNG still has some friends, and it always brings in a few folks to join the love. :) Just so you know, I've been watching NCIS all weekend again.

i just started my TNG episode marathon last night, still haven't finished the fourth season 1 episode yet LOL

Dane (in answer to your question of why I think 'Angel One' qualifies as a "good" episode): the intentional and unintentional hilarity of the situation Riker is put into. I can't remember a time when I laughed as hard during a TNG episode as when Riker came walking through that door wearing that garb. Troi and Yar taking the piss out of him was just fantastic. I found it very refreshing that characters could have fun at the expense of another character, and that whole scene (stuff Riker says, etc.) just worked very, very well...

...and the rest of the story was not botched to the point that it fell into "mediocre" land for me. A little perspective though: If I was to rank all of the "B" episodes (or 8/10 episodes, however you want to see it), this would fall in the bottom half of all those eps, if that helps.

Fair enough. I like that Riker scene too, that one and when Picard is on the receiving end of a snowball are the two scenes that pull me through this episode.
