Places you lived in, want to live in...

I've moved a lot, including a brief stint of homelessness as a young child. As an infant we lived with my grandmother for a short time, then moved to an apartment, which is the first home I can remember. The apartment was so small that I had to sleep in the closet with my sister. It had a patio made of grey stones, and my first memory is of sitting on that patio, and cutting my finger on the stones.

After that we moved to a small white house in South Seattle with a plum tree in the front yard; my sister broker her arm jumping out of it onto her bicycle, like the Lone Ranger onto his horse. After that a house with a stunning '70's decor of false brick and burnt umber shag carpeting, and, my favorite, a little blue house by the beach in West Seattle. Then I lived for a month in Cairo, for school.

My first year in NYC was the only year I lived in a dorm, NYU's dorms being notoriously overpriced. I lived in the East Village, near the university, and paid too much. Then I moved to Washington Heights, at the time a very bad neighborhood, especially for a white girl. The apartment was slummy, infested with mice and roaches. I recall walking up the 5 flights of stairs one night a few steps behind a fat rat, thinking, "Please, don't stop on my floor!" There were drug dealers across the hall, and once I missed class because I was to afraid too leave the apartment: I heard a commotion, and went to spy through the peephole as I often did, to see what sort of illicit activities were happening in the hallway. I nearly had a heart attack as someone pounded on the door right as I leaned against it. I peered through, barely taking a breath, and saw two men, both with handguns drawn, one pounding again on my door. I locked the chain with a shaking hand and waited for them to leave. A few days later I came home to find the neighbor's door on the sidewalk in front of the building, dented by a police battering ram. We had no heat or hot water most of the winter in that place, but I have fond memories nevertheless. I lost my virginity there, on the sofa on a steamy August afternoon, the sun and a Spanish love song pouring in through the window, the sequens on the pink curtains reflecting little rainbows around the room as the wind fluttered them.

I moved from there to a basement in Corona, Queens, where I stayed for only three months, and from there to the Tiniest Apartment In the World: another East Village room, 6 and a half feet by eleven, with an airliner sink and a shared bathroom for the floor, which I shared with an obese vegan Rent-obsessed fag-hag. Good Times. I lived for a month in Mexico for a study abroad.

Then I moved to Brooklyn, a giant loft in Williamsburg with a horrible 9 foot by 4 foot skylight that woke me too early in the mornings, then Greenpoint, a nice apartment but a bitch for a roommate whom I could barely tolerate for the year I was there. Back to Williamsburg, to a flat that had a lovely view from the roof, but too many roaches for my tastes, and finally, to my home now -- a beautiful apartment in Bushwick, with wonderful roommates. I'm pretty happy here.

I think that makes 14 homes, in 27 years of living.

I don't know If I could stay in one place for very long -- I've never tried. I love the city, and I imagine living in other cities sometimes, London would be nice, but I'd become a total slut if I were surrounded by so many sexy British accents. I sometimes long for the sea, but not the sea here. The Atlantic Ocean is old like a wheezy old man, grey with a fug of pipe smoke. The Pacific, on the other hand, is old like a primeval beast, violent and passionate and powerful. I love NYC but I miss the ocean in Seattle.

Where I've lived:

When I was born, my family lived in Pasadena, CA. We moved to Azusa, CA when I was 2yo and back to Pasadena when I was 4yo. I moved in with Hubby to Sierra Madre, CA (adjacent to Pasadena).

I was born in Los Angeles, and then spent the rest of my youth in the same house in La Canada (which borders Pasadena to the west).

I went to college in Boston for two years. The weather there is awful. I couldn't stand it.

I transferred to Davis, CA (about 10 miles from Sacramento). I have lived in the Sacramento area ever since, except my Junior Year Abroad program, when I lived in Melbourne.

I would go back to Los Angeles in a heartbeat, but my wife won't hear of it.

If you and Mrs. Digits are in the Fresno area, Hubby and I will take you out to dinner. Though it's a crappy freeway between there and here. Let us know if you'll be coming. I might even bake you some cookies--chocolate chip, snickerdoodles, or pecan sandies?

The only time I was in Sacramento was last year for the Bar. That didn't end well.

In total, 5 cities, one town, 4 States, 12 residences in 34 years.

Ages 0-2 weeks - Columbia, MD
Ages 2 weeks - 2 years - San Fernando Valley, CA
Ages 2-14 - Columbia, MD
Ages 14-18 - Annapolis, MD (2 houses)
Ages 18-19 - Oberlin, OH (college, 2 dorms, Annapolis for Summer)
Ages 19-23 - Charlottesville, VA (college, year-round, one dorm, two apartments. Parents ditched house, moved onto the sailboat and took off for the USVI.)
Ages 23-34 - Baltimore, MD (same apartment all but the first year)

I have a ton of stuff, I hate moving, and I like everything about Maryland and Baltimore. There's no place I can think of that I'd rather live. I'm cool with here.

I've lived in Ontario all my life, first in Brockville, now in the East of Toronto area.

Quite dull :D

If my wife and I are ever in Fresno....SHOOT ME!

We actually drive to Los Angeles 2-3 times a year for family stuff, but we go down the 5. There's a great breakfast place in Kettleman City we always stop at. It's almost exactly halfway.

I should also mention that, while I never lived there, my parents lived in Sierra Madre for a while. My best friend growing up lived in Arcadia, and my girlfriend in high school lived in South Pasadena. I know that area very well.

Clearly, as you've moved further away from me, and I am widely considered to be the most interesting thing in the province.

All you house movers certainly put my situation in perspective - and I thought I was a bit of a nomad...

Let's see... born in southern London, where I stayed for the best part of 5 years, then moved to Scotland where I would stay for the next 20 years in 3 different cities for 8, 5, and 6 years respectively (in the latter place I would live in 4 different places, all fortunately within walking distance of each other). My parents would during this time also move to New Zealand for about 4 years, themselves moving house within Auckland twice, before eventually returning to Scotland.

Once I started working, I would move all over the place: western Scotland for a year in 2 places, then South Yorkshire for the best part of 6 years. In that latter period, I would also move around parts of Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire depending on the demands of the job - there, I think I moved house 4 times overall.

Now, I'm back in Scotland, the place I really, actually do call home (seeing as I've been here for over two-thirds of my life) although I do miss my first Scottish home, as people who know and/or love me know. Depending on how things go, I might end up moving one more time and live in Glasgow.

I don't like moving around, but I see it as a necessity, and I do put my car to good use. If I could setle down somewhere, I would.

0-4: A suburb of Chicago we'll call "A"
4-18: a house ten mins away from "A," in a suburb we'll call "B"
18-23: Chicago proper
23-25: "B"
25-26: Another house in "B"
26+: Chicago proper, different location

I'm quite open to the idea of moving somewhere else entirely although it would be odd living somewhere where I didn't have so much history and know so many people. But I'm fairly confident I could make new friends, and I'm up for an adventure.

I also briefly contemplated a move to England.

Hey! Fresno's not that bad! We got ... we got ... we got .... Um. Never mind.

Kettleman City? Cancer Central? Something bad is there with all the cancer cases.

Sierra Madre was great. Small town feel in the middle of the Greater LA Area. Best of both worlds. Except for the smog backing up against the mountains. Which burn every 5 years or so in massive wildfires. When there's not an earthquake, that is. **sigh** I'd still move back there.

At least 12 different addresses spanning 3 countries and 2 continents. I come from a nomadic culture so I guess it's in my blood. It's taught me to be resilient and adapt to alien situations. I do sometimes wonder what it might be like to have strong roots in one place... no doubt I would have turned out quite differently.

I've traveled to many places but have only lived on Lawngeyeland. We do plan to move (hopefully out west, but probably Va.) in about 3 years or so.

Yeah Sierra Madre was nice. That whole 210 corridor between La Crescenta and Monrovia is not a bad place to grow up.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you go to high school?

Pasadena High School, right there at the end of the Rose Parade route.

Then Pasadena City College.

I've lived (in chronological order):

West Palm Beach, Florida (twice - grew up there and went back for a few months after college)
Birmingham, Alabama (college)
Dallas, Texas
Anchorage, Alaska (twice, with a short time in Boise sandwiched in the middle of the two much longer stints in Anchorage)
Boise, Idaho
Moscow, Russia
Atlanta, Georgia

Favorite place - Anchorage, Alaska
Least favorite place - Dallas, Texas & Atlanta, Georgia (tie)

I'd move back to Anchorage in a heartbeat if I wasn't stuck with this damn house in a craptacular real estate market and my sister didn't need me here in Atlanta for various personal reasons.

As for individual residences, wow. Not sure if I could do that, but I'll give it a shot:

Only 1 house in West Palm Beach - the house I was raised in (my mom only got rid of it a couple of years ago). Lived in this house both times I lived in West Palm.

2 dorm rooms and 2 summer apartments in Birmingham, Alabama

1 dorm room and 1 house in Dallas, Texas

1 apartment in Anchorage, Alaska during the first time I lived there (although I did stay with my girlfriend's parents for a few weeks when I first got to town)

1 trailer and 1 house in Boise, Idaho

3 apartments and 1 house (which I owned) in Anchorage, Alaska the second time I lived there

1 hotel room (lived there for over a month) and 2 flats in Moscow, Russia

2 houses (owned both of them) in Atlanta, Georgia

Yes. I am an expert mover.

I was born in Victoria, British Columbia, but my parents moved to Ajax, Ontario (suburb of Toronto) when I was fairly young.

My condolences ;)

I've spent most of my life in Victoria BC, with short stints in Seattle and Ottawa.

I will be relocating to Rome as soon as I collect my lottery winnings on Friday :(

I detest moving, but fortunately haven't had to do much of it in my life.

Just picked a few posts out, because it struck me just how differently people view their homes. A nice settled predictable home base is so vital to my sense of happiness that I just couldn't cope with continual upheaval.

No, I was moving AWAY from you

*sniff* I should have known... :(

Haha, thanks. Yeah, Ajax kind of sucks, especially in comparison to Victoria, but Peterborough was a great place to grow up: tons of lakes and forests around, so I spent a lot of time camping as a kid. And Ottawa is a great city.
