The reboot is not like tos. I wouldn't watch a movie just with kirk and spock, I could endure an episode if this was a tv show but not entire movies... they may be the main characters but it's the ensemble that let them shine and makes them interesting to me.
Also I'm a bit bored by their dynamic the way it is handed in the reboot tbh. I prefer the natural sans destiny bs friendship between kirk and bones, as well as the developing friendship between kirk and uhura. With Spock I find him and Uhura new and interesting because it permits me to see new layers of two characters I love. and I'd also love to see him being friends with others beside just kirk or bones for a change. I'm all for the reboot telling different stories and not being stuck with the old thing because this is a big cast with many interesting characters it would be a waste to not make a good use of them, if you don't do that in a modern reboot away from the restrictions of the 60s then when?
I agree that everyone has different opinions. For me star trek is Spock, not the entity kirk/spock. I had always been partial to his character and interested about his story. I'm not a huge fan of Kirk, though I like the reboot version by Pine and find him somehow more relatable.
That said, it would be a good idea to have movies with completely new characters where kirk&co can still make cameos.
wow thats a bit harsh for me as I hardly come across people that dont like kirk/spock. the kirk/spock dynamic was the heart of TOS and it make sense that the writers are trying to reflect that in the new films , although ripping off wrath of khan was not the best way to do it in star trek into darkness.
it was pretty terrible.
spock/uhura are intresting ...at least from the first film. I was sort of mixed about them in the second film , the other characters work fine as well. sulu/john cho in particular but I dont think liking this characters should all of a sudden mean you dont have to like the kirk/spock friendship. they are after all the most iconic characters in the show and I am sure you can see more layers to nuspock without him been in a romance.
in fact in TOS, Spock had a lot of romantic moments. Leia and that zarabeth chick that died 5000 years ago. so spock been in a romance with uhura in AOS is not new neither is it more of less interesting like when he had romantic moments in TOS.
I get why some dont like TOS Kirk. sometimes its hard to like him when william shatner is playing himself in the kirk role
