Picard's British Accent

I thought it was kind of dumb. Why not just make the character british? A frenchman with a british accent really made no sense. It's not like Picard's french ancestry was vital to the story any more than british ancestry would have been.

I used to live in Spain, and I knew many Spanish people and French people who spoke flawless English with a British accent. Presumably the teaching techniques in the future are far superior to today and Picard obviously took advantage of those techniques whereas his brother apparently did not.

I watched any interview with Patrick Stewart some time ago in which the question of the accent was addressed. His explanation was that, unlike many of his fellow Frenchmen, he learned how to speak English right.

If you really want to nitpick, you could therefore extrapolate the possibility that his brother and nephew learned to do the same thing.

Or you could simply accept that an English accent is far sexier than a French one. (Sorry to those of you with French accents, but...)

Maybe at the time of his youth, when learning English, there was a popular show on his vid system with predominately English accented characters. Or maybe regardless of how he learned english, perhaps he just formed his words in an "english" way, if that makes any sense. English is my primary language, but when I speak french, I do so with a German accent, which is just depend ant on the way I form the words.

I can only assume you've never been to Birmingham. Or anywhere near the Thames valley.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with a Yorks/Lancs accent, it's just everything south of the Trent that you want to avoid.

Well considering Picard's whole family have the same accent, I can only conclude that in WWIII we conquered France and stole all their vineyards. ;)

^ That would be the 100 years war part two, then.... :)

Anyway, northern accents are okay, but I'm still a fan of guys from the South. At least they don't think I'm from Australia.

Considering that the capital of the Federation now appears to be Paris, I would suggest that the French may have lost the battle but won the war.

And on the eve of the 90th anniversary of the end of the cataclysm that decimated the French nation - I suppose that that ain't such a bad thing to hope for.

Not necessarily. Presumably the World Government had its pick of cities to be the capital, so where better to go than Paris? The food ain't bad for a start.
