Picard series uniform revealed (close-ups)

Actually, based on the Endgame "Cadet Greys" and Wesley's gray "Acting Ensign" uniform, which may have been untended to evoke the gray/silver shirt worn by Cadet Finnegan in Shore Leave (TOS), I think that a plain solid color uniform (gray/black/blue) would be the default and Nog wore red because he was training as "Bridge Officer" (with a major in engineering) whereas a "non-bridge officer" engineer, medical officer or researcher would wear gold or blue respectively.

Agreed, although I suppose it's also possible that officers stationed at the Academy wear uniforms different than others stationed elsewhere.
The Kelvin universe had distinct uniforms for Earthside and Yorktown personnel, which our characters donned for their visits. Discovery had different uniforms for Enterprise personnel. DS9 switched to TNG-style when they visited Earth sometimes.

That said, I'm pretty sure Picard ends up with a team of misfits and renegeades, so I doubt we'll see too much Starfleet.

I like them. A nice evolution of the 90s aesthetic and a sort of reply to the recent trend of going super-detailed on costumes. Not EVERYTHING needs to have a custom print fabric in order to look cool! Cosplayers will have a much easier time replicating these, maybe to the dismay of Anovos and the like.

Similarly, the cut of the design will make it a whole lot easier for older and non-Barbie/Ken actors to wear. The DSC uniforms are not at all flattering to anyone with a bit of a belly. Not that anyone judges a show based on this, of course. :P

FYI, a look at DS9 Valiant demonstrates conclusively that cadets did wear division-colored uniforms at some point on-screen. So it's certainly an option.

In the Starfleet Academy game, there was a mention of Command College. So I assume there are Science, Engineering, Medical, Diplomatic, Counselling and Pastoral Care colleges. Possibly other specialist fields like Terraforming, Xenolinguistics, which are classes taken alongside one of the main division colleges.

Has there ever been consistency with cadet uniforms? My impression is that whenever a episode came along with such a plot element, the director just told wardrobe to go find things that fit the actors, with no clear set of guidelines.

This. The first Next Gen-era cadet uniform we ever see ("Allegiance") is what would become the Voyager costume, minus the undershirt.

About as much consistency as with TNG admiral uniforms. That is, none at all.

But I'm guessing the uniforms we've seen so far are the standard Starfleet officer uniforms of 2399 or whenever this show takes place, and people who are trying to convince themselves that they are cadet uniforms are just deluding themselves.

First it became the TNG cadet uniform when Wesley started going to the academy. They kept the shape of the
'hero' tng uniform but swapped the colors, so red was on top but the collar was the same.
DS9 kept the same cadet uniform, only changing the shirt and pants to gray so as not to confuse the audience.
Later on in Valiant, in Season 6 i believe, the cadet uniform kept the same clothing style as the commissioned officer uniforms; only swapping the undershirt and jacket colors so undershirt was gray but the shoulders were colored and quilted.

That 25% thing has become a Trek meme. It's already better and more entertaining than 47 ever was.

You're welcome :)

Deluding themselves? When we have scant information to conclude one way or the other? :vulcan:

Yes, it is my opinion, even based on the scant information, that people who think they are cadet uniforms are wrong. If I am proven wrong when the show comes out, so be it.

Yeah, there's no chance they will use the "future" uniforms that the other 24th century shows depicted. In-universe, differences could be waved away as being in alternate timelines.
