Spoilers Picard Prequel "Children of Mars"

I’ve said this before and I stand by what I wrote: I take Sulu’s line to be the literal statement Niven meant when he wrote the episode. A century before TAS, humanity (and humanity only) fought four wars (not skirmishes, not defenses from raids, not minor battles) with the Kzinti. People are welcome to take Sulu’s line out of context to justify how it fits into the whole Star Trek canon (so that I don’t get mistakenly labeled as someone who has ‘no imagination’) but IMHO it’s not necessary.

Except Sulu said the last war was "two centuries ago". If it was merely "a century ago" then there would be little canon issue with the statement, as the Kzinti would give Archer and crew something to do after the Romulan War. We would even be speculating that the Kzinti were taking advantage of post-War Earth or feeling out the early Federation and were rightly trounced four times.

Kirsten Beyer, Michael Chabon, and so on not knowing from Cogley or the Martian Declarations?

I can't see that.

They all have access to Memory Alpha, and Discovery has been the most referential Star Trek series because of it. If the short is on Mars, I would be very surprised if there wasn't a reference to Martian independence in some way.

You’re correct, I misquoted the date. Everything I said still applies though.

I stand by what I wrote. Nobody has an encyclopedic knowledge of Star Trek except for the people who post on this BBS. :)

Only if it's relevant to the story I assume.

I agree but only up to a point. Samuel T. Cogley was a very memorable character who made "Court Martial" really pop out. So if Michael Chabon was a fan in the '70s, then he should know who Cogley is because he really did stand out.

But would he remember someone like Lt. Commander D'Amato, or what episode he was in? Probably not. Neither do, I suspect, a lot of people here. ;)

I realized there already was a thread for the episode a while after I started the one specifically about the teaser with the girls - sorry I got excited XD

You'd be very surprised who's on this board and some of the people I've interacted with at one point or another over the last 20 years, either as a poster or a mod (no, not what it might sound like in the latter case, nothing bad or anything like that).

TrekBBS, and other boards, are a very good place to get a variety of feedback. And when I say variety, I mean variety.

So the aforementioned Kirsten Beyer?

You tell me; does she know about the Fundamental Declaration of the Martian Colonies? Maybe she can pipe in and let us know.

(If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m being facetious.)

Which may or may not be a good thing. :shifty:

TrekBBS is outdated. It's not what it was in the early 2000's.

We also have Facebook and Twitter now.

I consider myself fairly well-versed in Trek lore, but if I were writing a story to be televised that involved Mars, I'd probably pay a visit to Memory Alpha and Google to see if there was something I was forgetting about. Also, don't these shows hire consultants exactly for this reason?

You mean the show actually hires consultants to advise the writers on the nuances of fictional policies? :wtf:

No, they hire consultants for things like space science, not Star Trek historical canonicity keepers.
