Picard film in development

I'm only going by what the man wrote, but the implication from those comments is that he sees Nu-Trek (presumably Strange New Worlds and the iteration of Kirk they introduced) and the reasoning of "updating for modern audiences" that's been used for all of the "visual retcons" as well as the changes to the Gorn and Khan, as a way to overwrite TOS and his version of Kirk because the powers that be feel TOS is dated, or that Shatner's Kirk is problematic (i.e., hence the reason Shatner telling people "it's a character from a 1960s TV show - get over it").

Shatner already told an audience at San Diego Comic-Con two-years ago that he believed Gene Roddenberry would be "turning in his grave at some of this stuff" when he was asked about Nu-Trek.

When asked by a fan if there were any new Star Trek series he thought rivaled his own, Shatner replied, “none of them." ... “I got to know [creator] Gene Roddenberry in three years fairly well,” said Shatner, “he’d be turning in his grave at some of this stuff.”

TOS is dated. And SNW is a perfectly fine 21st century update to TOS. And Paul Wesley (and Chris Pine before him) are perfectly good updates to ‘60’s era Kirk. The only umbrage I ever had was the idea that DSC/SNW takes place in the same continuity/universe as TOS when it’s quite clearly a reboot/reimagining despite the nonsense CBS/P+ spouts. Oh, and that blatant xenomorph ripoff they call the Gorn.

And I’m pretty sure if Roddenberry were alive and in charge of Trek today, the only thing he’d be thinking about is how he could bang Jess Bush.

Norma Desmond had to be handled by Cecil B. DeMille and her ex-husband after decades of living in delusion. William Shatner recently hitched a ride into orbit.

If anything, Patrick Stewart is the one being humored by this potential film script that's likely going nowhere.

Leaving Shatner's Kirk off that promo banner was like having the most famous US presidents and not including George Washington. It does raise questions... and this is coming from someone that grew up primarily being a 24th century fan and only really got into TOS proper when the episodes finally became easily accessible.

And to keep this on topic, glad to see Shatner supporting a new film with Picard.

Never thought of it like this but this is far closer to the truth than I would expect. Trek is held up to this weird mix of standards that ultimately result in "Well, I'm against it."
They might as well be doing a karaoke of this Foo Fighters song. The lyrics fit what they think to a T.

Wait, no. Scratch that. I like that song. I don't want them ruining it.

Netflix is having problems (their streaming strategy is hemorrhaging money).

They've just cancelled over 100 shows.

The VCR started it all back in the 80's (you could record shows off the TV and fast-forward through commercials).

You could watch TV whenever you wanted. No more having to sit glued to the TV at a certain time.
Recording Trek was basically my major use case for a VCR in the 90s/2000s. It's funny how the internet changed that first to something similar with streaming, but then to needing to get up at 4AM to watch Picard S3 eps before spoilers would fill my feeds.

None of that is so.

Please don't compare Trek characters to important real-life historical figures.

Shatner would like it to "raise questions." The only one it raises is why a performer who has profitted so tremendously from a completely transactional relationship with a studio for over fifty years is bitter about not getting attention from their marketing department decades after his last contract.

It's not like he doesn't hold the attention of his loyal fans. Any time he likes he can trot east to Ticonderoga and get paid to have people fawn over him.

He's complaining about business decisions by business people. Performers and suits only love each other when they've got ink on contracts and he knows that.

Yes, he's "hitched a ride to outer space" - his life is awesome and still filled with as much opportunity as he's equal to, and he chooses to spend time having his social media people complain about not having his face on a poster.

Seriously, what the fuck?!

The most annoying thing here is that ranting about studio executives and marketers - not fans - being "threatened" by ShatKirk is a flat-out dog whistle. It might as well be designed to gin up netrage about "woke entertainment," and it's a dead certainty to launch a wave of ranting YouTube videos aiming to monetize the festering resentment of angry white male fans who are "tired of having diversity rammed down their throats."

Yep. I can already hear those assholes at TrekYards and Treksperts warming up their microphones. They'll be milking this for months.

"Captain Kirk agrees with us! We gotta stop woke Kurtzman Trek!"*

*Terry Matalas Trek not included because only He understands how to make real Star Trek.

Using analogies can quickly address a concept in one phrase that paragraphs would otherwise be needed to develop.

That said, in universe Kirk is a pretty important historical figure... saved Earth a few times, peace with the Klingons...

And we wouldn't be arguing here 55-ish years later if TOS didn't have a good cast that caught on, so Shatner is a very important figure in franchise history.

I think it's more about stirring the pot on Twitter, especially as that site has a vocal contingent of anti-TOS people.

That is not the important part, since they are going to promote current product, not historical information.

Which is all the more reason to ignore it. It's not actually advancing the franchise but stirring up shit for people not liking a segment of the franchise. Which is the exact opposite of the supposed Star Trek philosophy.

Importantly for this topic, Shatner is not a guy who will have any influence whatever on the development of a Picard film or, for that matter, any future studio Star Trek project whatsoever.

Neither will any of those YouTube ranters, for that matter.
Exactly so.
