Spoilers "PICARD" Actor confirms ship name...

It's also apparently a Civilian starship, so something more personal for its Captain (Cristobal Rios?) makes sense.
Like the FESTOON for Baron Grimes.

The word refers to a mermaid, though the sirens of Greco-Roman myth are also wrapped into that.
I wonder if there will be any thematic overtones related to this in the show.

They might want to stay away from rocks.

In real life, yes we have.

USS Forrestal, USS Ronald Reagan, and USS George H.W. Bush were all commissioned and launched when the people they were named after were still living.
Oh, I didn't know that. I was actually just talking about in the shows though. But since the naming system in the show is based off the one in real life, I guess they could do it on the show though. Either way I'm glad that's not the name of the ship, Picard being on a ship named after him just feels..... weird.

In Trek, we struggle to find ships named after people who would have been alive after the founding of the Federation...

Was any ship ever named after a Starfleet employee? Chekov is a common name, its Western spelling somewhat arbitrary. Pike, likewise (although that was only ever on a shuttlecraft). Archer may not even be a proper name. Conversely, we can of course argue that there once was a famous Starfleet captain named Horatio or Grissom or Venture.

In any case, it's cool to have a hero ship not associated with Starfleet. I wonder what will factually be different...

Or The Siren, though mermaid for a ship name is the nicer option.
I'm thinking that may be the more likely translation, just due to the bit of info we know about the guy who may be the Captain ...
Cristobal "Chris" Rios: The pilot of Picard's ship and a skilled thief.

We have three possible interpretations/translations:

1. The Mermaid (in the sense of the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale or Ariel, the little mermaid)
2. The Siren (in the sense of a machine making loud noise (police siren, alarm siren, emergency vehicles siren, etc.))
3. The Siren (in the sense of the evil mythological creatures who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and singing voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island)

I guess all are possible. The Mermaid would be the most typical. Naming a ship after a nice beautiful female mythological creature would be the most ordinary choice for a guy. Naming it after a police/alarm siren would be the most ironic and funny choice for a thief. Of course theoretically it could also be that he sees himself nowadays as a cop, fireman, helper in need of time, etc. and therefore his ship as a modern version of a police car, fire truck or ambulance. But I think it is unlikely that he is naming his ship La Sirena because of this. Naming the ship after an evil mythological creature is more interesting. Though no idea why Rios would do that.
