I guessed it would have been called Reliant or Destiny, since those two names were trademarked awhile ago by CBS.
The USS Tos was a great ship.
They might want to stay away from rocks. The word refers to a mermaid, though the sirens of Greco-Roman myth are also wrapped into that.
I wonder if there will be any thematic overtones related to this in the show.

Have we ever seen a ship named after a person who was still alive?I actually kinda thought the ship would end up being USS Picard. Out of all the series TNG is the only one not to be named after its parent ship.

And Short Treks and Lower Decks.and TOS, and TAS.

Oh, I didn't know that. I was actually just talking about in the shows though. But since the naming system in the show is based off the one in real life, I guess they could do it on the show though. Either way I'm glad that's not the name of the ship, Picard being on a ship named after him just feels..... weird. In real life, yes we have.
USS Forrestal, USS Ronald Reagan, and USS George H.W. Bush were all commissioned and launched when the people they were named after were still living.
Was any ship ever named after a Starfleet employee?
According to Google Translate, The Mermaid.
I'm thinking that may be the more likely translation, just due to the bit of info we know about the guy who may be the Captain ...Or The Siren, though mermaid for a ship name is the nicer option.
