No reason is given. I guess they figured even mentally-challenged AI had to go as well. Seems pretty cruel to me.

And I cannot imagine what kind of experiments B4 underwent under Maddox and the other Daystorm researchers for 5-plus years (from 'Nemesis' until the Mars attack):confused:.

As a fully functioning android, Data had the free-will to choose on whether he is willing to subject himself to Maddox's experiments and he said no thanks. But being mentally challenged, B-4 had no such choice. The poor thing must've endured a lot of stuffs before he was finally disassembled :confused:.

We don't know that Maddox was or is a bad guy yet. His demeanor towards Data changed and that may have carried forward. Without any kind of clue as to where they are going, I imagine his work is being subverted by someone else.

He doesn't have to be a bad guy to be in Picard's way.

And scripts in TNG were constantly being rewritten in order to fit the TNG "vision". i remember one pair of writers mentioning in one script all that remained was a sight gag and a single line.

Do episodes like 'Code of Honor' or 'The Child' (which are now deplored by most viewers - due to racism for the former and sexual trauma for the latter) fit anywhere in the TNG 'vision'?

I didn't say anything differently. I simply said that if you're an executive and you're looking at data about "what works" and "what doesn't" in the Trek franchise, this is what you're going to conclude.

I actually agree with you in general, although I can't resist pointing out that, prior to the reboot movie, the most commercially -successful Trek movie was a light-hearted romp about the saving the whales. :)

Talk about sending the Powers That Be mixed messages! We love KHAN . . . and the whales! We love how utopian TNG is . . . but our favorite eps include the one set in a dark dystopic version of TNG ("Yesterday's Enterprise") and the one where the captain is captured and mutilated by horrifying cyborg zombies! :)

Give me a simple design in jewelry.

I haven't watched this but how come B-4 is disassembled and in a drawer?

Dr. What's Her Name (not good with names, not bothering to look it up) says Data's memories eventually overloaded Lore. I took that mean he simply "died naturally" from trying to cope with Data's memories and then they took him apart to study the components more/better. I kind of doubt even with the the ban on synths they'd have deactivated B-4 or would have to Data if he were still alive.

The impression I got, and this may be the "old Trek"/Utopia Future/Federation and Humanity Ideals taking over in me was that the "Synths" were synthetic but not sentient/sapient. They were just humanoid-looking robots who were highly advanced but not sentient, I guess I'd equate them to the various "androids" we see all over TOS where they're just human-looking robots but, unlike Data, aren't "alive."

Dialogue says that they don't know why the Synths flipped their shit and attacked UP but that it was enough to get Fed/Starfleet to shut down any ongoing research probably out of an "Okay, we almost had a Terminator moment here, we came too close. Maybe we shouldn't fool around with this shit because it could lead in a direction we don't want to be in" sort of thing.

I think it is exactly the general 'utopian' tone of the show that makes those episodes so harrowing and memorable.

Don't forget the one where the Captain is involved in a plot that ended in the murder of two beings. ;)

I understand "Code of Honor". But what's the beef with "The Child"? Not the best episode, but there are a ton worse ones out there.

I don't think the term even remotely applies to the vast majority of things people try to put it on, anyway.

Most certainly not to DSC.

I suspect that "grimdark" is going the way of "jumping the shark" and "Mary Sue" in being a once-useful term that's been thrown around so loosely that it's pretty much lost any meaning beyond "that thing I don't like."

Very true. Personally I quite like grimdark when it is done with proper amount of black humour and satire. I just don't want grimdark in Star Trek.
