To be fair, it likely has a larger budget than those movies did.
Factoring in inflation its pretty much guaranteed.

No doubt about it Picard certainly looks and feels expensive so far, its easier to do with a somewhat limited series, trying to do that with a 20+ episode series is another matter and corners have to be cut.

It certainly seems to be spending a higher percentage of the available cash on the script.
It really does show script wise but I dont know if that is really about money, too many cooks in the kitchen, trying to do too many things at once or all of the above, although I do think Discovery looks great and you can see that CBS didnt scrimp in that regard.

Then there's the question of "How do we fill our order of 22?" :shifty:
Yeah which understandably causes the script quality to fall at times.

Some double episodes feel like a movie and some movies feel like episodes, when that happens the fault is definitely down to scripts and pacing.

When the issue is how it looks then its down to money.

I dont really have preferences in regards to the films, I am either in the mood to watch one or I am not.

Scripts on DISCO don't bother me, but the TNG movies, with the exception of First Contact do not have good scripts.

The standalone Disco scripts worked fine, its the overall season arc story line that felt a bit disjointed, its not a surprise though with everything that went on behind the scenes.

I never really had a problem with any of the Star Trek films, even Nemesis.

I like all of the Kelvin films as well, even Into Darkness which I know some of you dislike.

I agree. From a guy who grew up on TOS, and was never too impressed by TNG, First Contact is still my second favorite Trek film.

Oh, I meant second or third TNG movie, it is way down my list overall (as are all the TNG movies). It mostly comes across as an uninspired zombie movie.

It's practically Stewart's best performances in the franchise. And nothing TNG related comes close to its cinematography, IMO

I actually prefer Nemesis to First Contact. I think it was simply the more movie-like movie. While the execution was rough, it felt far more original that First Contact.

They always struggled with getting scripts they could film. Which is why we ended up with "The Menagerie" and the behind-the-scenes cock up that was "Arena".

And scripts in TNG were constantly being rewritten in order to fit the TNG "vision". i remember one pair of writers mentioning in one script all that remained was a sight gag and a single line.

To each their own. To me more original doesn't mean better. Execution of the idea has to be worth something.

I think there's enough good acting, interesting scenes and overall originality to easily push it past First Contact. There's also a bunch of cringeworthy stuff as well. Beyond that, it was the first time a Star Trek movie felt like a movie since TMP. Frakes is a competent director, but his work is very conservative and TV-like.

But, like everything else in life, mileage will vary.
