Picard still has that neural defect which Crusher said could lead to him developing multiple neural disorders later on. Maybe this is another one.

Self Righteousness has been a powerful driving force at the core of Picard's personality. I can certainly see him walking away from Starfleet if it no longer lived up to the standards he had for it where it came to something that he put a huge amount of his personal self image into. The Romulan situation would have been a perfect storm in that case.

Tyler, however, didn't have the sex. Voq did. Tyler just remembers the sex Voq had. I'm not sure how to qualify it. If one has multiple personalities, do all of them need to consent for the sex one of them has for it to be consensual?

I don't care how Trois impregnation was achieved or how she acted afterwards. She still didn't consent.
Yeah, both "The Child" and "Unexpected " in ENT play fast and loose with consent. Its disgusting yet gets ignored.

IMO, Tyler remembers what Voq consented to, but for a human being, I can see that Klingon sex could be pretty traumatizing. But he's traumatized by something he's experiencing second hand through someone else's memories.
He's traumatized by memories of a sexual experience he did not consent to. Memories of something that happened to his body. It's rape.

Man Trap has a pretty great ethical dilemma at its core: Should we kill the last of its kind, even if it’s killing us? And the answer is yes, which is pretty darn shocking by modern Trek standards.

There was no dilemna at all. They killed first and waxed poetic about the buffalo later. McCoy's dilemna was a problem with killing his lady love.

They could have tried to trap it & drop it on a salt rich planet. Nada.

Again, you are 100% right that would not happen now.

yep, they'd have two of the same sex so that they can shoot one and save the other

Welp, this thread is effectively dead. I've been reading the same continuous argument for 5 pages now and it looks nowhere close to a resolution. Can't wait for the episode 2 thread on Thursday.

A bunch of people earlier in this thread chastised me for suggesting that we'd be best served to avoid "DSC vs PIC arguments" with the usual "THIZ IZ A STAR TRACK MASSAGE BORED WUT U EXPECT US 2 DO U IDEEIT!?!!!1!?" retorts.

I rest my case, with great satisfaction.

It's not grim dark to explore war.

No it’s not.
It is grim dark to have people’s insides on the outsides for a few different reasons but the time you get a few episodes in, and have some of those insides be inside someone else as well. It was like a running theme.

There’s a bit more than ‘Klingon sex’ that happens to Tyler, and it’s not entirely sure that Tyler isn’t the outer skin and stolen personality/memories of a captured PoW wrapped around what they could fit of VoQ.

In terms of The Child...well, Kira gave consent, but when she ended up pregnant with the O’Briens child, did anyone have sex with her? (Meta text doesn’t count. We know it’s Julians fault.....)

Space 1999 was just as dark as Discovery is, and it was on network TV in the 70s. Disco is hardly grimdark.

Nonsense.
For a start, it’s time and place of production wouldn’t allow it. But if you can find the on screen eviscerated cadavers and lopped off heads, go ahead.

I thought the episode was great. Loved the tone of it. Thought the cinematography was beautiful at times. Picard's compassionate nature and righteous fire were both on display. I'm excited that we're going to be exploring the Romulans more post supernova.

I'm also hoping it doesn't rely on nostalgia too much in terms of its future cameos, plots, references. It's a fine line to walk, imo.

So far so good. Apparently we're to view the first 3 eps as the full pilot/prologue. I'm happy to do that. It was pretty much how they structured DSC, too.

I'm really happy to see the shooting style for PIC to be more leisurely, unafraid to linger. We get to focus on the characters as they talk to each other. (Spinning cameras and frantic cutting do not make a discussion more exciting, it only makes the whole thing seem try-hard.) Thumbs up for being able to pay attention to actors doing their job. :)

It always happens, so I just skip over it.

You cant really avoid it as they are the two Star Trek shows currently in production.

They are both similar so they are bound to be compared to one another.

My thoughts/concerns on Disco are well known, yet I have no doubt that Picard has benefited from the missteps taken in Disco and the lack of issues behind the scenes helped as well.

Some comparison is inevitable, but this has gone seriously off the rails.
