Grimdark includes dystopian, so that doesn't work either.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grimdark

I dunno... it sounds to me as if dystopian settings can be included in grimdark fiction but aren't necessarily required.

But yeah, Trek definitely isn't grimdark. The article descriptions suggest things like nobody being honorable, might making right, nihilism, etc. I guess Picard has flirted with some of that, but no more than DS9 did, and still ultimately reaffirming the power of the heroes' noble values.

My biggest thought about this book is apparently the Cardassian and Bajoran governments are completely without any sense of gratitude. Garak was instrumental in the victory of the Dominion War and they immediately throw him under the bus afterward.

Twenty-plus years isn't exactly "immediately." He didn't make it quite as long as von Braun, but that's not a bad run for an assassin and war-criminal getting a PR makeover.

Perhaps.

I will say as an ending for Garek, I actually like this a bit more.

Before, Garak's hell was to live the rest of his life among Bajorans.

Now it is his reward.

I have nothing but good things to say about this book! Una you are the most beautiful writer! The way you bring so much into the ending after such a complex story into a lovely ending. Thank you so much for sharing your creativity to this world. I never saw the twists and turns! So much world building and character development I’m sad Picard books aren’t coming out anymore. This was the last one. I read firewall first. This set of books left me wanting more. Thank you!

This isn't the last Picard novel last year a Seven of NIne book came out by David Mack. Also another one About Raffi and Seven of nine audio book was printed as a paperback last year too.

So murder is happy and sympathetic?
No, it isn't.

But I find Garak a happy and sympathetic person in many of the DS9 episodes.

He's a great character and deserves better than being destroyed the way he was in that book.
I don't like when my favorite characters are destroyed.

But he is a cold blooded killer. You can't really say he is happy and sympathetic when he killed innocent people in cold blood.
The same can be said about many heroes in Star Trek and other series where there are conflicts and deadly encounters.

besides that, Garak is a great character who has played a great role in DS9. He deserves better thnan to being made look like a complete idiot and then being killed off.

He wasn't made to look like a complete idiot.

Yeah, there was a long discussion about this here, right?... Anyway, I for one think this was great closure for a complicated, unique character.

Oh yes he was!
The character has been totally ruined.

Why should a great character like garak have a "closure"?

A great character who could show up in many interesting books to come has been wasted like somthing worthless.

I see no accptable reason at all to waste a character like Garak.

Is this a trend among the Star Trek authors nowadays?

Should all good characters from the Four Great Series (TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY) be killed of and7or destroyed in so many possible ways and focus will be on the crappy characters from the NuTrek movies, DSC and PIC?

If that's the case, then Star Trek literature will commit a slow suicide.

Yes they should. And it's your opinion on the characters in DSC and PIC are crappy. I enjoy Picard immensely.
