Pic of medical tricorder, communicator, and comm ear piece...

It's predictable that at Trekmovie.com and here people like Uhura's earpiece best - not because it looks particularly good or sensible or anything, but simply because it looks like what we've already seen in TOS.

It's round and made of metal and all shiny--that's why we (I) like it.

I'm sorry, but that communicator looks like a brick. I'm getting TWOK flashbacks. Though I'll grant that that may be more realistic for military field equipment...

Sure.

Frankly, Uhura's earpiece looks dorky - it's just a lathed aluminum geegaw. People walk around on the streets with sleeker, more interesting bluetooth earpieces right now.

Hmm.
I'm not sure about the Uhura ear piece. I was hoping they would not use the old design and go with something better, more modern looking, given what we have available today for our cell phones etc
Oh well, it'll do I guess.

And isn't that communicator a bit big ? Its design looks good though.

It looks as if the communicator has a black lid that flips up to reveal whatever control interface there is. The profile view of the device is pretty similar to the old version without being a slavish copy as the earpiece is.

Typical Star Trek fan bashing something when they haven't even seen the movie yet

That doesn't look anything like a salt shaker to me. This is another example of TPTB being out of touch with the original series.

Fuck you, Abrams!

Which is good, but couldn't they have put at least one curve on the damn thing?

I swear, this new comm is going to be my leading zero. Oops, I mean leading 0zero. :shifty:

Considering the size of the ear-piece, the communicator can't be all that big, maybe just a bit larger than this:

What's great about this picture is that I didn't spot the lightsaber till right now. Despite reading through the thread two or three times

I like how the wand and the communicator look recognizable, but with new details. The ear piece looks right from the 60s show. And while it's a bit odd looking, I have to say this: at least it doesn't look like a product placement for bluetooth. I'm a bit sick of seeing sci-fi movies where all of the technology looks like it's from last year's event sci-fi movie.

Overall - Props match the Bridge design aesthetic (vaguely iPod/iStore).

Communicator - Basic concept seems tomatch the OS, but it looks more believable as a true mobile communications device. Good balance.

Earpiece - Not much to change from the OS or Movies. Keeping this much closer to Uhura's is the only way Uhura using it can look "right". It is an iconic image. Making it more shiny is the only realistic way to match the new design of the Bridge.

Medical Tricorder - There was no "medical tricorder" specifically seen in the OS, so it would likely look very different. This is a medical instrument rather than a traditional tricorder.

I suspect more standard Science/General tricorders may be seen that look similar to the OS version of the prop.

Could actually be something different, but mislabeled.

Thank you, M'. Now I can read all of page one!

I think the Tricorder looks more like a Universal Translator. The Communicator and Earpiece are passable.

Spock: "I do not understand the point of that instrument."

McCoy: "You will in about seven years."

Agreed. The ear piece "in action"

Dudes...I am sorry but that Communicator sucks. The earpiece is the only thing that looks good.

And what does it look like?

The original.

*sigh*

WHY in the world use the same design in Uhura's EARPIECE and change the communicator?

Bah!

I hope someone goes back and changes JJ's timeline.... -grrrrrrrrrrr-
