PHASE II (f.k.a. New Voyages) Appreciation Thread

I know there's a few threads about the episodes here, but I thought I'd start a general one here.

Phase II is arguably the most prolific Star Trek fanfilm, attracting several industry professionals including Trek veterans to donate their talent. David Gerrold, DC Fontana and Jon Povill have all written scripts, James Cawley was an assistant to William Ware Theiss, and George Takei & Walter Koenig have both guest starred. Even the late Majel Barrett-Roddenberry has recorded the Computer Voice for the show. There are more people I could name.

I honestly believe that these guys helped reignite the interest in Kirk & Spock before JJ Abrams - for me it definitely did - I was never interested in the 60s show itself, though I was a fan of The Movies, TNG, DS9 and VOY. After looking at New Voyages that changed, and I came back to Trek.

Come What May/In Harm's Way was at the time very advanced, and at 5yearmission.com they were promising the fourth season. They were even discussing adapting comic/novel storylines, but the show has flourished. It was because of this I wanted to go back and watch Seasons 1-3 and The Animated Series.

Highlights include Kirk’s gay nephew, the focus episodes for Sulu and Chekov, a revisitation of Excelsior (Zicree has pitched a Sulu webseries, but unfortunately it hasn’t reached fruition). Coming up are an origin story, a Klingon story with a visit to Qu’Onos and an appearance by Arex from TAS.

Now the show has of course developed into Phase II. I read the Reeves-Stevens' book and thought it was such a pity those cotumes, set designs and scripts were never used. Now they're being used which is great - Xon is onboard the Enterprise even though he's a supporting character, he's there. If you consider 'In Thy Image' as the original pilot, I consider this set THE OTHER SIDE of the story - leading up to TMP rather than after.

After the backlash of fans to the JJ Enterprise, they decided not to use a slightly redesigned ship, again based on the unused show. I think moving towards the movies by updating a bit is a GREAT move - It will give Phase II its own identity rather than another interpretation of 'Season 4' (like in comics, novels and a few other fan projects). Also using unused elements such as finally making unused TOS/P2/TNG scripts will in my mind close chapters, finally letting fans see shows such as Blood and Fire/the upcoming Kitumba etc. However good or not (i.e. Tim Burton’s Superman Lives) there is always a curiosity surrounding well-documented unmade projects.

So , earlier this year Cawley announced that this Summer the show is ‘relaunching ’ the show, with a ‘Teaser Poster’ with the updated ship, and a typeface similar to that on the Ballantine Books of the 1970s. My prediction is that rather than the 60s show, they’ll do the 70s show, using more elements from the Lost Series.

Cawley’s teased the Motion Picture uniforms, so are they being phased in (no pun intended!!) How many episode will there be before the ship goes in for a full refit? Will more Phase II scripts finally be shot? Will Spock leave early as per the Lost Series? Will they ignore the movie and take Kirk and Crew in a whole new direction? I doubt it, as they said they like to keep with established canon. It will be nice to have a full ‘season’ or two to slot between The Animated Series and The Motion Picture.

They’re filming to a sequel to a TOS episode next week, but I think the subplot will be the updated ship. Cawley says there are a few surprises in store – and I cannot wait.

Thank you Phase II for a great show, I’m still so excitied by this project nearly a decade on! And I watch developments like a hawk. :bolian:

Count me in the Phase II camp, but if you're going to talk most prolific, Hidden Frontier has more material out there than Phase II or any other Star Trek fanfilm. :)

Rather looking forward to the revamped Phase II. Blood and Savagery sounds interesting. Wonder if they'll shoot any of it in Bronson Canyon. ;)

Aah - so true - around 70 visual stories within a Decade, counting Voyages of the USS Angeles, Odyssey, The Helena Chronicles and Federation One, plus the crossovers with you guys - most of them 20minute episodes - that must be a record for any amateur production!

That's not counting your show of course, which I feel is very closely linked into their universe now, even though you''re independent.

Not a bad thing when you're flying the flag for Britain out there!

Of course there are crossovers too with Dark Armada (Knapp); The Expidition; all the audio shows and then some of the people are involved with Phase II so it's all connected in some form or another, you could say you're all one happy family playing in the Roddenberry sandbox...

I've been trying to get James to come up here to Vermont to have a look at a gorge right near me. Just below the Highgate Falls dam on the Missisquoi river, there is the most dramatic gorge, perfect for an alien landscape...or a western shootout (Wink-wink, Wild, Wild West!) There are two bridges that span it for fantastic overhead shots from a number of angles! I'm just two blocks away, know every inch of that ravine, (easiest ways in and out) and am at your service....

Honestly, I don't think fanfilms had a lick of influence on the public's interest in Star Trek. Most people I know, including most fans of the show, had and have never heard of these fanfilms, let alone watched them.

And, maybe I speak for a subset of people who follow these things, but I don't care about all this dot-connecting that goes on. I just want good stories well told and well acted that are about something (thematically).

Well Thank you all for your friendship and support. Count me in as a fan of "Hidden Frontier". They worked hard and I enjoy their work. I am also a Nick Cook fan!
PHASE II is changing, and re-launching next week!
Many surprises are in store and announcements and video releases will start very soon.

I'm celebrating the fact that all these different groups can work together rather than be rivals. Im sure someone can draw up a list of all the fan audio/video crossovers. In a way it mirrors what they did on the various series. I guess the internet has enabled people to connect and share ideas/files etc easier

As a viewer it becomes hard to forget that these started as hobby projects - but however small it is some of them (Phase II, Hidden Frontier, Intrepid etc) have now grown fan bases of their own!

Sounds like a great spot. :)

I mentioned Bronson Canyon because it actually appears in Bread and Circuses, a fact I was ignorant of until we visited it on our last LA trip. Amazing how many times Trek has used that little spot.

And James, back at ya my friend. :)

It is entirely possible to have both. :)

I hope Phase 2 can continue to bring us some of the best Trek we have seen in years. I hope they can complet the 5 year mission. I hope the work will bring in the next genneration of fans, by that I mean younger fans. Roddenberry's stories and ideas are as valid today as they were 45 yrs ago. I await the announcements and hope this will increse the intrest and access to thses great stories. Thank you all. :bolian:

I share the same sentiments. Quit connecting the dots and tell stories that matter about characters who take action and bleed a little of their soul in the process.

I've known about Phase II for a while, but could never get the episodes to play on their website for whatever reason (I suspect Tribbles in the interweb).

Just recently I stumbled across them on Youtube and I have to say I enjoyed them immensely.

One thing I particularly like is the fact that the sets are actually built, so that the actors can interact with consoles, etc. The work that goes into something like that is impressive, especially for a fan production.

Now patiently waiting the next installment.

I am also a fan film fan. I have enjoyed many a webisode of Phase II, Intrepid, Hidden Frontier, etc., and it is good to see the Star Trek universe presented in a fashion that fans enjoy. True, not all stories are gems and there is always an issue or several based on individual tastes but overall I can appreciate the very hard work it takes to create downloadable Star Trek for our enjoyment. LLAP to James and all the others.

Totally agree. Hidden Frontier was my first fan film experience back in 07. I fell in love with it and enjoyed it more than Paramount produced Trek. I also got into Intrepid and loved the cross overs you guys did with each other. It was when I saw Bobby Quinn Rice was playing in Phase II that I crossed over to Phase II and fell in love with it as well. It was cool to see you and Bobby and JT Tenapa appear in P2 cause I had missed watching you guys.

The best Phase II by far is Blood and Fire. Can't wait to see Mind Sifter since it was one of the first stories about Trek in print. A very ambitious project that I can't wait to see.

Agree, Phase II/New Voyages is impressive.:bolian:
