Peyton Manning's Future

If he did want to play again, I would say Miami is his best bet. Washington is a nightmare, and Peyton's PR image would suffer with the Jets. He wants to win the Super Bowl, not pad his stats.

I have to believe that after hiring Joe Philbin to run the show, the Dolphins are going to make a serious run at Matt Flynn (I'd guess that Seattle and Miami are his most likely landing spots). Peyton will get cut, test the free agent waters, and wind up playing another year or two in Indianapolis and teaching Luck. (Remember, Peyton himself didn't really come into his own until 2003 or so.)

Oh, so all those records he broke his rookie season were just warm-ups for 2003+?

Most touchdown passes, most games over 300+, most yards by a rookie in a game (later broken by Cam Newton), etc.

He wasn't awful in his first few years (and I never said he was), but it wasn't until 2003 that he A) really took his completion percentage to another level and B) stopped hurling so many interceptions.

Honestly, I wouldn't play again if I was in his shoes. Risking a balky knee or bad back is one thing, being paralyzed or killed on the field from a routine hit is a bit much for me.
He has been cleared to play by doctors. If there was an eminent risk of paralysis I don't believe any doctor would have cleared him to play. From what I have read, he doesn't have fractured vertebrae which does carry a risk of paralysis for a professional athlete and is the reason Rich Gannon had to retire some years ago.

Again, from what I have read, he has (or had), I believe, degenerative cervical disc disease and a bulging disc. The herniated disc was taken care of by one of the surgeries, and though I don't know for sure, I suspect the other surgeries may have had to do with scar tissue or the like. People hear neck surgery (especially multiple surgeries) and automatically think there is a great, or greater, possibility of paralysis. This is not the case with all cervical injuries and corrective surgeries.

If he retires it will likely have to do with the inability to regain full arm strength or because of recurrent pain. But the threat of paralysis would not appear to me to be more likely for Manning because of these injuries and subsequent surgeries.

4 neck surgeries seems to indicate a touch of weakness there to me, no? Not sure I'd take up a job where there are 11 people who are ACTIVELY trying to slam me into the ground 40-50 times a game.

Either way, seems like it's headed towards that sad area where the once-great guy just keeps trying to come back, but doesn't have what he used to, a shadow of his former self.

Manning's own doctors have cleared him to play. The Colts team doctors, though, won't let him anywhere near the field. And if it's true that he's developed bone spurs, he may have to miss all of '12, too.

Have the Colts' doctor's stated that he is not cleared to play because there is eminent risk of paralysis, or is it some other issue like the possibility of further damage or lack of proper strength in the upper extremities?

It is hard to see the Colts' doctors saying that if he plays again he could be paralyzed (with supporting post surgical findings and diagnosis), and Manning's doctors looking at the same post surgical findings and diagnosis and clearing him to play. In situations like this doctors tend to be overly cautious rather than optimistic.

Well, could be Colts' doctors saying what Jim Irsay wants to hear (or tells them to say), Manning's doctors saying what he wants to hear. My natural reaction is to believe Manning of course.

Well, I wouldn't order the headstone yet, especially since he hasn't even made one comeback.

Miami or Arizona.

Less likely Arizona. Peyton would rather not go to the NFC and face his brother on a semi-regular basis.

Because Miami is currently in a significant transition with a new head coach and all, Peyton might feel he can have a significant input on the overall offensive schemes.
In addition, one of his many homes is located in Miami.

The more interesting rumor I've been hearing is that Reggie Wayne and possibly Garcon would be following Peyton.

I know nothing about Miami except that it doesn't have a wide receiver like Larry Fitzgerald.

Outside of maybe Calvin Johnson, I'm pretty sure no other team has a wide receiver like Larry Fitzgerald. :)

Miami's borderline #1 receiver is Davone Bess who is good to very good and whose performance will likely markedly improve with a quaterback of Manning's caliber. (been a pain in the ass for the Patriots for a while now).

They also have Brandon Marshall who can be wildly inconsistent but is also a playmaker.

Denver would be a pretty good fit, especially since they have the cap room for both Peyton and Wayne (who has made it known that his intention is to follow Peyton to whatever team he joins). If Manning is actually going to Denver, that means that there are legitimate talks going on. Playing for John Fox makes so much damned sense, too -- dude won games with Rodney Peete under center, for heaven's sake.

I still think the Jets are flying under the radar, here. If Peyton can pass a physical, I guarantee you that they'd cut Sanchez in a moment's notice to sign him. And even if the football people didn't want to (and they would), Woody would overrule them.

That being said, word is that Manning's camp is refusing to let team doctors take a look at his arm prior to formal contract negotiations and will only take a full physical after a deal is agreed upon, which could seriously impact his signability.

Manning to Denver could also give the Broncos an exit strategy from "Tebowmania". It was pretty clear last year the intention was to let Tebow go in for a couple of games, fail miserably, and shut the fans up.

Having a legitimate QB would put Timmy T back on the bench, under the guise of "learning from Manning".

I like the idea for no other reason than that.

I would be so damned happy if Peyton went to the Broncos I don't know what I'd do. Because I like the Broncos and it would finally put Timmy back in the box. Plus, I wanna see people's heads explode for having to choose between Peyton and Tebow.

That'd be like trying to choose between Kirk and.... Harriman. Personally, I think Peyton would fit best in Miami, but I'm ready to cheer him on no matter where he ends up.

Drew Litton gets it right, again
