Peter Graves (Mission Impossible, Flying High) has died

I'll always remember him most for his humorous roles. Besides the obvious 'Airplane!' there was also his recent GEICO ad where he was just as brilliant as ever:

And who can forget the Peter Graves episode of Mystery Science Theater? I always felt like that was done with love by the MST folks to honor his comedic roles.

My thoughts go out to his older brother, James Arness (who wears badge #2 in the U.S. Marshalls' Service).

This is very sad. :( Peter Graves was quote cool as Mr Phelps, an iconic role; it was very sad that the producers of the movies chose to reboot rather than continue and make use of this great actor (and ruined the character).

RIP, Mr Graves. There will always be those who appreciate you.

Long live John "The Colonel" Camden.

RIP.

He will be missed by a great many people who enjoyed watching him.

Goodnight Mr. Phelps....

Didn't Peter refuse to even see the movie in the theater for this very reason? Or was he the one who walked out right in the middle of it?

That's a shame. A good actor who played one of the most iconic parts in genre fiction, as well as a superb comic role in the Airplane films.

QFT.

Yes. I was mentioning James Arness in the other thread about Mr. Graves death. I was lucky to meet him at Roy Roger's musuem years ago. Mr. Arness told a story once where Graves tried to convince him to guest star on MI, but for some reason, maybe on different networks, I can't remember, but "they" wouldn't let him do it.

Peter Graves had good DNA. I swear he was like Dick Clark and never seemed to age for a long time.

I really loved him in Mission Impossible. And in Airplane. One of my favorite SNL skits was Phil Hartman imitating him in those world of discovery shows.

RIP, Mr. Graves.

Yeah, he definitely wasn't happy about it, and I don't blame him. I have no interest in seeing the movie either.

I don't know fellas. It's a pretty good film, and while I can understand why it gets all the hate, I also think it's worth viewing at least once.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I feel like passing judgment on the thing without having even seen the picture is rather narrow-minded. Do you judge books by their covers too?

I'm not judging it by the poster, I'm judging it by what I know: It turned a clever, tightly plotted TV show into an action movie and corrupted the main character because it's so kewl and trendy to do so. I have dozens, probably hundreds, of books and DVDs that I want to look at, so I'm really not inclined to waste my time on something that I have zero interest in.

The first movie was hardly an action movie, it's got a very tight plot that, hell, you'd probably have to watch a couple of times to fully understand. Though it did rape Phelps' character which is a legit complaint.

Well, it seemed pretty action packed from what I saw, and from what I heard. But even if they did try to recreate the undercover suspense of the TV show, screwing over Mr Phelps would have been enough to keep me away.
