Peter Capaldi's Salary

StCoop

So the BBC were forced to disclose the salaries paid to all of their Talent, including Peter Capaldi and while I'm not going to quote the figure here (it's easy to find if you must know) it's pretty astonishingly low. Basically he made less for one series of Doctor Who than he would for one episode headlining a show in the US. In fact doing a handful of Conventions a year would essentially pay him the same.

So while the idea behind this might have been to "shame" the BBC by exposing how much of taxpayers money they throw around, in this case it least, it seems he's been ridiculously underpaid.

Probably good for Jodie though, since there'll be no way they can get away with paying her less.

Even the lowest paid star is getting roughly 3-4 times my salary. Sure, it's not the millions that american actors are supposedly paid; but only the top talent gets that much.

Huh, no wonder he's both lean AND grumpy all the time.

(I kid, I kid)

As a working actor in Canada, when they say you don't do it for the money, IT'S TRUE. Guess the Beeb takes it to heart.

I guess the closest context to wonder about is what the folks at ITV get paid for similar leading roles?

As there's absolutely no reason not to quote the figure in this thread, he reportedly earned somewhere between £200,000 and £249,999 in the last year.

Just so not everyone has to go look it up. For better or worse, it's public information now.

A lot of the commentary seems to be along the basis of "how many people get paid more than the Prime Minister," I reckon Theresa May just wants a pay rise.....

I don't think the anyone cares - I suspect much of the story behind how much on air talent is paid at the Beeb is right-wing shit stirrnig - the murdoch press is doing the same thing to the ABC in Australia.

Though yes the disparity between men and women is an issue that needs to be addressed (Will Whitaker make a much as Capaldi? time will tell).

That's a non-issue. ITV doesn't get paid for by the License Fee.

only because people don't clue in that they pay it indirectly (the stuff they have buy as frequently been advertised and the retail industry factors that cost into their prices)

I thought it wasn't a lot, either, especially since he was already a well known actor when he took on the role. But the figures released are only what the BBC pays people directly and it doesn't include BBC Worldwide so I keep wondering if that's really all Capaldi got.

I would presume that Equity has some sort of arrangement regarding residuals with the BBC, including secondary markets. He would probably get more residuals from a heavily aired commercial in the US of course.

Yes, I am aware of how advertising revenue is generated and used to fund independent television - what you seem to forget though is that the License Fee is essentially a form of tax funding the BBC.

Just a little perspective:
Kaley Cuoco (Big Bang Theory) makes almost 4 times as much as Peter Capaldi made in a year IN JUST ONE WEEK.

Given the way CBS (Big Bang is on CBS isn't it?) is funded and the completely different way the BBC is funded, that's like comparing an Apple to a Potato.

It's also a bit weird to compare an original cast member in season 10 of a hit show to a guy who joins a show 50-plus years into a successful franchise and only sticks around for 2 seasons.

i said it was just for perspective. Now we know why there are so many UK actors/actresses vying for jobs on US television.

so, did Barrowman (et al) get paid a nice amount more doing Torchwood Season 4 for Starz?

i said it was just for perspective.

And as I said, it's like comparing an Apple to a Potatoe - it makes no sense as they are wildly different due to the respective ways the channels are funded etc.

Now we know why there are so many UK actors/actresses vying for jobs on US television.

And it helps that they're better trained as well.
