Pawn Stars

Next you'll be telling me Matt Smith doesn't actually travel through time in a phone box to shoot those episodes of Dr Who...

He doesnt. Its actually a PUBLIC CALL BOX that is supposed to hold criminals, (with a POLICE telephone), that just happens to travel through time.:p

Anyhoo:borg:..I knew this show was fake from the start. But I still enjoy it for the historical aspect.

That's basically why I watch it. Yeah, there's the entertainment value of people like the goober who was trying to sell Willie Nelson's keychain (MY FATHER WAS A GOOD MAN), but mostly I enjoy hearing the finer details of historical pieces. Hearing why an item has a particular value is fun.

Also, DVR'ed episodes are decent background noise for when I'm doing boring work on my computer.

Pretty much the same for me... Hell if it wasn't for 'background noise" I doubt I'd watch more than 2 or 3 tv shows a week.

Yeah, the historical anecdotes are what makes the show good - and that's why I don't mind that it's on the History Channel.

Like the Ottoman empire gun and knife, that was interesting. Escpically since the knife had been used.
Second thing that interested me was that small noise maker cannon. Good thing the kids didn't play with it when it had powder and ball in it.(though the powder would probably be no good, but it could still cause internal explosion.)

At least it makes Pawn Stars and American Pickers somewhat related to history because of those bits of the show. Unlike some of the other fare the History Channel rolled out over the past couple years like Axe-Men and Ice Road Truckers.

Yeah that's a great point. You can pretty much tell it's staged and constructed. It's just like any other reality show that way.

well, it's just for entertainment and the Harrisons and Chumlee are entertaining. I bet pawn shops in Vegas make out really good. I'm always a little disgusted when someone drags in something that daddy cherished and the family has passed down through generations, but they can't wait to try to get some cash for it.

I dont mind at all when people bring in their cherished family items except that they could get lots more money selling it on ebay than the pawn guys will ever give them. What are you really going to do with all that stuff you save anyway? You end up a horder like most of the places the Pickers visit. Garages and barns filled to over flowing with junk that will just get thrown away when you die.

What gets me are the people who want the collector price. And those with family treasures (but not treasured by them). I’d rather sell it within the family at the pawn shop price, or less, just to keep it in the family.

^ People want the collector price because it's the max they could potential get for their item. They're not being realistic though.

Regarding Chumlee, I don't think he's stupid...clueless maybe at times, and he does and says dumb stuff, but that doesn't make him a dum dum. He's clearly meant to be the comedic relief of the show lol.

BTW, we had stopped there when we were in Vegas. None of the main “characters” were in that day. There’s a huge center-island display case that they must remove for filming.

And the stuff was not cheap. When Rick says, “I’ll sell it for whatever I can get,” I wouldn’t believe that. And they’re expanding.

Makes sense, wouldn't you say? People watch this from home and go "Martha! I gotsta have that! Hop in the jalopy and let's go down there!"

In a way, I think it's probably similar to people who collect things that were used on screen in Star Trek (or other movies/tv series) ... Especially if it was featured in a close-up or had an interesting story behind it.

And I would guess that Rick and the others know it. They know they are famous now, and people want "stuff" associated with famous people. And if it's double-famous (say, an autographed book from George Washington, that was in Rick's store) they'll pay even more.

As for the center case, my guess there is they don't film year round, just a few months out of the year, and you may have visited during their off season.

Not only are they getting paid for the show but the pawn shop as well. People are often different on camera. Once you put a camera on person its no longer reality, only animals can do reality. So them not being there doesn't surprise me.

They're almost never there. The "Old Man" is retired and comes in for filming segments. Rick pops in a few times a week and mostly does accounting in the back. Corey and Chumlee now spend their time doing promotion, the casino tour circuit, etc.

Now that I know most of it is staged I find it hard to enjoy. Last Monday when Rick pretended to be upset he bought a fake Indian kids vest I was like, "Yeah right. I highly doubt this happened, especially since I have seen stuff that it is obvious was legit and he wouldn't buy it."
