Paul Wesley's incarnation of James T. Kirk

Shatner looked older than Kirk's canonical age of 33 in Season 1 of TOS. They don't need to do anything to Paul Wesley.
Maybe, but Kirk's only ~27 at this time (current, non-time travel SNW), not 33...and Wesley's 40. Shat at 28:

Not much we can do. He is the age he is. At least he wasn't born when Shatner was or he'd look almost 50 in the role. #Mid20thCenturyLiving

;)

I get why they cast the age that they did. We hardcore Trekkies might not like it knowing the canon ages, but the general audience wants to see someone more "mature" looking as Kirk and will instinctively react negatively probably to someone who looks too young, even if the actor is at the canonical age Kirk should be in SNW.

My evidence? Just a hunch having been outright called too young looking even well into my thirties as an Asian guy.

So this week, we won't be really discussing the episode in question I guess.

Instead we will be sitting from the sidelines as fools drag out videos of Jim Carrey doing a Shatner impression on SNL.

It's as if actors playing roles that are older or younger than their actual age is a new thing... Some people. Nitpickers gonna pick nits I guess.

< Chevy Chase as Spock voice >

I am unaware of Jim Carrey lampooning William Shatner on SNL, Commodore. Carrey portrayed Kirk in two skits on "In Living Color" on Fox, not "Saturday Night Live" on NBC. The computer isn't certain, but it thinks this NBC used to manufacture cookies.

He's doing way better. I see the resemblance when he smiles. It was nice to see him try his hand at a little James T. Kirk seduction.

It was Paul Wesley playing Paul Wesley, and honestly.. that's fine. The cynic in my mind says he was cast to bring in the Vampire Diaries audience. If it helps keep Trek afloat, no big deal.

They write him enough like Kirk (even in the S1 finale). It was the performance that didn't work for me, however there's enough room for this new take on the character.

He's never going to be the lead of this show, so all he has to be is an effective supporting character.

So Kirk in 2260 is just a Lieutenant?

Under 5 years till he becomes Captain?

So if they keep Wesley as a series regular. That's basically going to play out on SNW.

Hey, Picard jumped from Lieutenant to Captain almost overnight when he was forced to take command of the Stargazer. He was already the Captain of a Federation starship by age 28.
