Paul Newman - 1925-2008

“We are such spendthrifts with our lives,” Mr. Newman once told a reporter. “The trick of living is to slip on and off the planet with the least fuss you can muster. I’m not running for sainthood. I just happen to think that in life we need to be a little like the farmer, who puts back into the soil what he takes out.”

NY Times Obit

Time for a viewing of Slap Shot, in memory of a great one.

RIP

"All right, let's show 'em what we got, guys! Get out there on the ice and let 'em know you're there. Get that fuckin' stick in their side. Let 'em know you're there! Get that lumber in his teeth. Let 'em know you're there!"

RIP Reggie :(

He lasted a few weeks longer than I thought he would, so I will give credit to his strength of character. Take it easy, big guy.

Dam, R.I.P. Mr. Newman

"Why would I go out for a hamburger when I have steak at home?"-Paul Newman on the longevity of his Marriage to Joanne Woodward

Newman also was an avid race-car driver. At 82, he finished fourth in the Glen Nationals last year, driving a Corvette with 640 horsepower and a top speed of 185 miles per hour.

Sad news. Also strange. For some reason I always think of him as about the age he was in The Sweet Bird of Youth. :(

Now's the time for a Cool Hand Luke/The Hustler DVD marathon...

As he burns hundreds of gallons of gasoline in multi-million dollar race cars.

Seriously though, I had seen some interviews and he was really down about losing a step as he's aged in that regard and unable to perform as he once had. Happens to everyone but he seemed to not be at peace about it so perhaps it was his time after a long life. I think my favorite role of his was Cool Hand Luke which I actually only saw for the first time a couple of years ago.

the Sting:
"that's what you get for playing with your head up your ass."

Thanks for making everyone's life a little richer, now relax you've earned your rest.

The first movie I saw him in was The Hudsucker Proxy, which was very fun.

He was married to Joanne Woodward for 50 years this year.

Sad, but not shocking considering his health.

I will have to go buy some of his popcorn in honor of him.

He was a legendary star - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Cool Hand Luke, The Sting, The Verdict, and on and on - and a great humanitarian. He had a good, long life which he lived in full. Rest in peace, Paul Newman.

We're going to be losing a lot of legends over the next decade. :(

His passing is truly a shame. A great actor, a great humanitarian, and a great family man, a trifecta you rarely see in Hollywood.

I wonder what his passing does for Pixar's plans for Cars 2 in 2011? It just wouldn't be the same without him as Doc Hudson. (For that matter, George Carlin, who played Fillmore, recently died as well.)

Almost certainly the greatest movie star of all time and one of cinema's greatest actors. Plus he was simply a great man. RIP Cool Hand Luke - the silver screen seems a bit duller suddenly ...

You know, it's getting to be that time. Eventually, names like Eastwood, Nicholson, Freeman, Hackman, Beatty and Redford will be coming up too. :(
