In typecasting terms, your first choice for a stroppy, sharp-tongued but somehow likeable older woman. (Unless it's on radio, in which case try Anna Massey - as in the 8th Doctor/Charley story The Girl Who Never Was).
Could possibly have made Livia Soprano even scarier...
I had a feeling they wouldn't do Episode 1 right away. IIRC they didn't shoot Rose first, either. Or Christmas Invasion but I might be wrong there. I recall Davison's first story was something like the 4th one he filmed, too (even though it was part of a trilogy).
I just hope Moffat doesn't do the old "Doctor in distress" post-regeneration subplot again. This has been used in one way or another for virtually every debut Doctor story (save maybe Tom Baker and of course Eccleston) since Jon Pertwee, and for once I'd like to see a new Doctor hit the ground running. He certainly has the right shoes for that! But more seriously, Smith is having to follow arguably the most popular Doctor ever, so to have him asleep for most of the episode, or going around with amnesia, or moaning about the regeneration failing, probably wouldn't work if Moffat wants to establish Dr. 11 in a strong, dynamic fashion and win people over to Matt Smith.

As mentioned it's Annette Crosbie, who appeared for many years in the comedy "One Foot In The Grave" alongside Richard Wilson (from another Moffat story"The Empty Child") whose character's catch-phrase was "I don't believe it."

Well, time to cross Matt Smith in DT's clothes off my list...that leaves "glimpse of new TARDIS interior via new backdrop." Any takers?

And even the Tenth Doctor's spectacles, so it seems (unless those are actually Smith's)...Ten weeks into shooting and they're finally getting round to Episode One.
They tried to cover him up but you can see Tennant's trousers and trainers peeking out from under his robe.

Hopefully she'll be horribly murdered by Zygons or Sea Devils or Daleks or Zogaranians in the opening episode
quite right. Let them go back to being one-dimensional cyphers whose only function is to say, "What does that mean Doctor?", twist their ankle, scream and get captured.
Then again, even at age 10 I found it odd that Tegan didn't seem to be that bothered by her Aunt being murdered and shrunk down to the size of a doll.
ah, well I can reveal that he will. apparently 10 will put his glasses on moments before regenerating in order to read a sign.
