Paramount working on DS9 HD?

@Dukhat: Did the museum version of the Defiant-A have a NX or NCC prefix?

I’m pretty sure it was the Defiant’s original registry, despite that making no sense whatsoever.

Edit: Just checked the screencap. You can see the name but the registry on the nose and nacelles are obscured by dark areas and blurry lighting. So that was probably intentional; it’s their concession for the reuse of stock footage in DS9.

I think this is likely to happen. Topaz AI is really taking off. I've used it and it's helped me out of some tough spots when upscaling old, public domain footage from 100 years ago. I've also used it to upscale crappy footage I've gotten from clients.

Bottom Line: Someone somewhere is eventually going to want to upscale all of DS9 and VOY and will want to put it on the black market. If they have the time, the means, and the inclination, someone will do it. Upscaling is a lot easier than it used to be.

Making official upscaled versions of DS9 and VOY would be Paramount+ getting ahead of bootleggers and other people who want to monkey around with something they don't have the rights to.

Cautiously optimistic. Altman generally doesn't say stuff like this unless it's reliable.

I don't really care about the ships as long as it is a genuine HD remaster from the original film, and NOT some cheapo AI upscale.

And if they're doing it, I'd hope they would go for 4K HDR - DS9 would really benefit from the extra dynamic range.

Heck, I would have liked to have a completely new design for the Defiant-A, but unfortunately that ship sailed when they showed it in the Starfleet Museum in PIC.
That'd be a non-starter regardless. When the Sao Paulo/Defiant A first shows up at the station, Ezri comments "I didn't know we were getting another Defiant class ship." So on screen dialogue pretty much prevents any new design being used there.

As for the registry, even the novels have kept the "NX-74205" registry for the other Defiant, and when asked about it in our own Trek Lit forum, authors and editors of the novels said they did so under instructions from Paramount/CBS who told them "that is the ship's registry." If that's the studio's official stance on the matter regarding the ship's depiction in a text medium where we can't even see it, it stands to reason the studio is likely going to insist any remaster of the show also adheres to it.

Besides, TOSR didn't change "James R Kirk."

Yes, that’s true. They could possibly overdub the line or cut that scene entirely, but I really don’t see them doing that, especially now that the ship was seen in PIC.

The Defiant is what it is. I’m much more interested in seeing what they do with the other CGI ships.

There's nothing preventing Starfleet from reusing the registry, it's just paperwork. If we are stuck with it, I'll just consider it part of the misinformation/propaganda campaign against the Dominion.

It's just a change in Starfleet policy from what was done with various Enterprises.

HD did wonders for Data in drag.

That was a fun episode. Concerning a possible DS9 High-Definition re-release: I think the wild spotted Jadziaus Daxus in its natural habitat will prove to be a bigger pull.

Best of all? No CGI (expensive or otherwise) required. Hm...upon further consideration, there is another incentive...

Just addressing your earlier post re: derisive comments. Why? It's not disrespectful towards anyone involved in the production of the show. The fact is, if you have a modern screen north of 50", you're going to have pretty crappy image when viewing DS9 in its SDR format.

When we purchased our first 4K HDR screen a couple of years back, I watched Lord of the Rings and a couple of X-Men movies in 4K / HDR - it was stunning. On a whim, I decided to see what the glorious CGI mayhem of Sacrifice of Angels would look like. It was a rude surprise to see how poor the quality of the episode was on my fancy new TV.

I was watching DS9 on Paramount+ via my Roku on a 4k TV, it looks fine.
Does it look as good as TNG in HD? No, but I don't think it looked 'crappy'. It just is what it is.

During TNG it was an unwritten rule in the writers room that only the Enterprise-D was allowed to have a letter. One or two ships slipped through the cracks, but that was because of the writer not knowing about it.

I don't know if that same rule existed during DS9, but I don't recall any ships with letters in that show. Voyager had 2, but one was from the far future, and the other was a fake alien ship.

Yup.

Looks find. HD is overrated and somehow doesn't take away from the story.

I'm good as it is.

I am watching on a big screen installed by the previous owner of the house. Whatever a high end screen was approx. 2008. This is making me think maybe I should never get a 4k player and screen, because I don't want to have to replace every DVD I own.
